The Necessity of Maintenance After Volvo Generator Set Work

Aug. 04, 2023

All types of generators used in Volvo generator sets, such as synchronous generators, rechargeable generators, series motors (starting motors) and exciters. Their maintenance and maintenance work requirements are basically the same, the content is similar, and they all focus on the electrical part. The daily maintenance of the generator is carried out during or after each shift.

Keep the outer surface of the motor and the surrounding environment clean. Do not place any objects on or inside the Volvo generator set. Clean off sand, oil and dust to avoid hindering heat dissipation and overheating the generator. Strictly prevent all kinds of oil, water and other liquids from dripping or splashing into the motor, not to mention metal objects (such as nails, screwdrivers, coins, etc.) or metal scraps from falling into the motor. Turn on.

When starting each shift, during the idling preheating period of the engine, you should monitor the running sound of the Volvo generator set rotor, and no abnormal noise is allowed, otherwise the machine should be shut down for inspection. Monitoring method: Put one end of the blade of a screwdriver on the shell near important moving parts such as the bearing of the motor, and put the ear on the insulated handle of the screwdriver. Judging by operating experience. Under normal circumstances, the sound of the motor is stable and even with a slight wind noise. If there are sounds such as beating, rubbing, etc., it indicates that the motor is faulty, and it should be shut down for serious analysis and inspection. Before starting the unit, check the fastening of the foot screws. When the speed reaches the rated value, if the unit vibrates severely, it should be shut down to find out the cause and eliminate it.

When the motor is in normal operation, you should pay close attention to the indications of the ammeter, voltmeter, frequency meter, power factor meter and power meter on the control screen to understand whether the motor is working properly. If the indicator is found to be out of the normal range, it should be adjusted in time, and if necessary, it should be shut down for inspection and troubleshooting. Pay attention to check the circuit connections of various parts of the motor to ensure that it is correct and reliable. Always touch the motor housing and bearing cover with your hands to understand the temperature changes of various parts of the motor. Normally, you should not burn your hands (generally not more than 65°C).

Check whether the grounding of the generator is reliable. Check the operation of the conductive contact parts such as the slip ring. Normally, there should be no sparks or a small amount of very dark sparks. The brushes should have no obvious bounce and no cracks. Pay attention to the end of the winding to see if there are flashes, sparks, burnt odors and smoke during operation. If found, it indicates that there is insulation damage and breakdown. It should be shut down for inspection. Generally, it is not allowed to add or reduce a large load suddenly, and it is strictly forbidden to run a long-term overload or a three-phase load seriously asymmetrical.

Pay attention to ventilation and cooling to prevent moisture or sun exposure. Pay attention to the integrity of the joints on the Volvo generator set and the tightening of the screws. It is prohibited to discard or damage the protective cover of the Volvo generator set end cover air inlet and outlet during operation, not to be blocked by debris.
