Generator gas springs with weakened elasticity or shortened free length can be repaired using appropriate methods. There are two commonly used methods for repairing generator gas springs: the cold - working method and the heat - treatment method.
Cold - working Method
Put the spring on a circular shaft (the outer diameter of the circular shaft should match the inner diameter of the spring). Then, clamp one end of the spring together with the circular shaft in the chuck of the machine tool. Fix a moving rod on the tool post of the machine tool. File a groove slightly larger than the diameter of the spring wire at the head of the moving rod, and embed the spring into the groove. Press it tightly with the tool post. Slowly rotate the spring while rotating the chuck. For each rotation, the moving distance of the moving rod should be 1 - 2mm larger than the spring pitch. Continuously tap the spring gently with a small hammer to harden the metal surface of the spring, thereby increasing its elasticity. The service life of the spring repaired by this method is relatively short. Therefore, this method should only be used when there is no other choice. Generally, it is better to replace it with a new spring.
Heat - treatment Method
Place the generator gas spring in a thick iron sheet box filled with cast - iron filings around (the cast - iron filings can prevent the spring surface from oxidation). Heat it in the furnace to about 925°C and keep it warm for about 1 hour. Then, take out the iron sheet box and cool it in the air. After that, take out the generator gas spring and put it on the mandrel of the repair fixture. Install the mandrel together with the fixture into the frame of the fixture. The frame is made of 6 - mm - thick cast - iron plates and is cut into slots according to the pitch of the new gas spring. Press the mandrel with the valve spring into the slots. Then, heat the generator gas spring together with the fixture to about 810°C, and then quench it in oil. Heat it to 310°C again and cool it in the air. At this time, the hardness should be RC41 - 42.
