How Do Diesel Generators Work?

How do diesel generators work?

A diesel generator is actually a machine that converts mechanical energy (generated by a built-in internal combustion engine) into electrical energy. The different components of a diesel generator work in tandem to produce electricity. Some of the basic components of a powered diesel generator include



Engine - As the main component of a diesel generator set, the engine provides mechanical energy, which is subsequently converted into electrical energy. In fact, the output power of these diesel generators is directly proportional to the size of their engines.


Alternator - This is another key component of a diesel generator that uses the mechanical input provided by the engine and converts it into an electrical output. The alternator consists of a rotor that generates a magnetic field to eventually produce some alternating current. This is why the rotor is called the main part of the alternator.


Fuel system - This component stores and supplies fuel to the alternator. In general, a fuel system can easily run a 62.5KVA silent generator for about 6 to 8 hours.


Lubrication System - This unit ensures the smooth operation of the different components of the diesel generator. This is why it is recommended to have the generator's lubrication system properly checked to avoid any malfunction.

Diesel generator working principle

In the diesel engine cylinder, the clean air filtered by the air filter is fully mixed with the atomized diesel fuel injected through the nozzle at high pressure. When the piston works upward, squeezing is produced, the volume decreases, the temperature rises rapidly, and finally diesel ignition is achieved.


The diesel fuel is ignited and the mixture burns, expanding rapidly in volume and pushing the piston downward. Each cylinder works in sequence, and the thrust on the piston through the connecting rod becomes the power to push the crankshaft to rotate, thus driving the crankshaft to rotate.


Diesel generators use the principle of "electromagnetic induction", the generator output induction electric potential, and finally by closing the load circuit, you can generate electricity.
