Troubleshooting Weak Operation of Diesel Generator After Starting

For diesel generator sets using electric starters, if the unit runs weakly after starting with extremely slow starting speed, it does not indicate a fault in the diesel engine itself. A detailed inspection of the electrical circuit should be conducted to determine if the battery is fully charged and if all wire connections are secure.

The inspection methods for weak operation of diesel generator sets after starting are as follows:

1.Check if the battery has sufficient power level. Insufficient power level in the diesel generator battery will affect starting difficulty or failure to start. Judge by the electric spark produced by jumping the positive pole of the battery to the ground; if the spark is weak, the battery is considered insufficiently charged.

2.Check the contact between the electric brush and the commutator (or commutator). Under normal circumstances, the contact surface between the bottom surface of the diesel generator brush and the commutator should be at least 85%, and there should be no jamming inside the brush holder. If it does not meet the technical requirements, fine sandpaper can be used to pad the surface of the commutator to grind the working surface of the electric brush into a circular arc shape. The electric brush should be replaced with a new one. The material of the electric brush is made of graphite, which has good conductivity, soft texture, and is relatively wear-resistant. The brush holder should be securely fastened and not allowed to become loose.

3.Check if the commutator has burns, wear, scratches, pits and other phenomena. If there is much dirt on the commutator surface, clean it with diesel or gasoline. If there is severe burning, scratching and wear, resulting in an uneven or out-of-round surface, it can be repaired or replaced as appropriate. During repair, the commutator can be turned on a lathe and polished with fine emery cloth.

4.Check the working surfaces of the movable contact and the two static contacts inside the generator electromagnetic switch. If the movable contact and static contact are burned, causing the starter to run weakly, the movable contact and static contact can be ground flat with fine emery cloth.

For the diagnosis of such faults where the diesel generator set runs weakly after starting, the battery should first be tested. It is necessary to find out whether the engine cannot start due to insufficient battery power level, and then check the brushes and commutator.
