3. Coolant for Shangchai Diesel Generator Sets

The coolant used for directly cooling the diesel engine in the cooling system is usually clean fresh water, such as rainwater, tap water, or clarified river water. If well water or other groundwater (hard water) is directly used, since they contain more minerals, it is easy to form scale in the water cavity of the diesel engine, affecting the cooling effect and causing malfunctions. If only hard water is available due to limited conditions, it must be softened before use. Softening methods: ① Boiling method - boil the water and let it settle; ② Add 0.67g of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) to each liter of water, stir, let it settle, and use the upper - layer clear water.

Note: Never use seawater to directly cool the diesel engine.

When the diesel engine is used in an environment below 0°C, the coolant must be prevented from freezing to avoid cracking of relevant parts. Therefore, after each operation of the diesel engine, the coolant in each part should be drained. For models with a closed - cycle cooling system, antifreeze coolant with an appropriate pour point can be selected according to the local lowest ambient temperature.

When using flammable antifreeze coolant, since ethylene glycol and alcohol are flammable substances, fire safety should be noted. Before using antifreeze coolant in the diesel engine, the dirt in its cooling system should be cleaned to prevent the formation of new chemical precipitates, which may affect the cooling effect. For diesel engines using antifreeze coolant, there is no need to drain the coolant after each shutdown, but the composition should be regularly replenished and checked.

Note: Never use 100% antifreeze as coolant.

If there is too much scale and dirt in the cooling system of the diesel engine of the Shangchai diesel generator set, a cleaning solution can be used for cleaning. The cleaning solution can be prepared from water, soda (Na₂CO₃), and water glass (Na₂SiO₃), that is, add 40g of soda and 10g of water glass to each liter of water. During cleaning, pour the cleaning solution into the cooling water cavity of the diesel engine, start the engine and run it until the outlet water temperature is greater than 60°C, continue to run for about two hours and then stop the engine, and then drain the cleaning solution. After the diesel engine cools down, rinse it twice with clean fresh water, drain it, then pour in cooling water and start the engine to run until the outlet water temperature reaches above 75°C, stop the engine and drain the sewage, and finally pour in new cooling water.
