Running-in of Volvo Generator Set

Before using a newly purchased Volvo generator set or a generator set after overhaul, it needs to go through a running-in process, which is the process of contact, friction and occlusion of the unit's parts. Because the machine parts are new or updated after repair, the surface of the parts is not smooth. If they are used immediately under high temperature, high pressure, high speed and full load conditions, the parts will wear, which will shorten the service life of the generator set. Therefore, the running-in of diesel generator sets is very important.

The running-in of Volvo generator sets after repair is divided into cold running-in and hot running-in.

1. Cold Running-in of Diesel Generator

Cold running-in refers to the process where the diesel generator set is driven by a motor or other power on a test bench to rotate the crankshaft, so as to achieve the purpose of running-in the crankshaft connecting rod mechanism, valve train and other moving parts. During this process, oil with low viscosity needs to be used, and fault checks can also be performed on the diesel generator set to see if there are abnormal noises, cylinder scuffing, air leakage, etc. After cold running-in, all the lubricating oil in the oil pan of the diesel generator should be drained and cleaned with cleaning oil.

2. Hot Running-in of Diesel Generator

Hot running-in refers to the process where after the diesel generator set is installed and carefully inspected, the unit undergoes no-load and load tests to further inspect and adjust the machine so that it has good power and economy. After all technical indicators meet the requirements of no-load running-in, then load hot running-in is carried out. This period is generally about 60 hours, and the operator of the diesel generator set can also determine it according to the specific situation. In the process of adding load, there should be a process of gradually increasing the load from small to large until the diesel engine reaches the normal standard of load hot running-in.

During this process, attention should be paid to checking the installation of machine parts, whether the clearance between the mating parts is appropriate, whether the starting unit runs evenly, and whether there are special noises in the piston, piston pin, crankshaft main bearing and connecting rod bearing.

Notes: During the hot running-in of the diesel generator, the temperature of the lubricating oil should be controlled within the range of 65℃-75℃, and the temperature of the cooling water should be controlled within the range of 70℃-80℃.
