Proper Lubrication for Cummins B Series Diesel Engines

Jul. 29, 2025

Since its launch, the American Cummins B-series diesel engine has been widely favored by users and quickly captured the market due to its advantages such as compact size, high power, advanced technology, reliability, durability, good applicability, low cost, and convenient maintenance.

Many users’ engines remain in good working condition after traveling 400,000–500,000 km, or even 600,000–700,000 km. However, some engines suffer severe damage after only a few thousand kilometers—mild cases involve excessive oil consumption and significant power loss, while severe cases include bearing burnout, cylinder scuffing, or even cylinder collision, leading to engine scrappage.

Why do engines of the same model yield such drastically different results? The primary reason lies in improper use of engine lubricating oil, with two main issues in lubricant application:

Firstly, the selection of lubricating oil: inability to correctly choose and recognize branded lubricants.

As we know, engine oil for vehicle diesel engines should be selected based on different engine models and operating conditions, with varying additive ratios for different oil grades. Taking CC and CD grades as examples, their additive ratios are listed in the table (note: the table mentioned in the original text is not provided here).

The additives listed are typical proportions; however, lubricant manufacturers develop unique formulations for different brands based on specific needs. Although lubricating oil consists of base oil and additives, and its quality primarily depends on the base oil, additives are equally crucial. In daily use, mixing lubricants from different manufacturers or brands often causes chemical reactions between additives, leading to severe oil degradation, loss of lubricating function, and frequent engine damage.

Additionally, there are misconceptions in purchasing and using lubricating oil:

Misconception 1: Assuming clearer oil is better, and darkening indicates poor quality. In reality, diesel engine oil darkens because dispersants and detergents in the oil dissolve and disperse carbon deposits and gums from the engine walls. If the oil never darkens, it suggests serious issues with its additives.

Misconception 2: Disregarding the manufacturer’s recommended oil grade and blindly pursuing "imported brands" or believing "higher price equals better quality." This often results in using oil that deviates significantly from specifications, ultimately damaging the engine.

Misconception 3: Following advertisements blindly. The market is flooded with various anti-wear additives, but their effectiveness is debatable. Unless specified in the product instructions, additives should never be randomly mixed into engine oil.
