Proper Diesel Generator Oil Level

However, everything should be viewed from two sides.

The oil level in the oil pan of a diesel engine should not be too low. If the oil level is too low, it will result in poor lubrication and an excessively high oil temperature, leading to early wear of mating parts. Especially when going downhill, passing over bumps, or making an emergency stop, the oil strainer may be exposed above the oil level, sucking air into the oil pump and causing a failure to supply oil, resulting in serious accidents such as "shaft seizure" and "bearing burnout".

On the other hand, the oil level in the oil pan is not the higher the better either. When the oil level is too high, the oil can easily enter the combustion chamber, causing the exhaust pipe to emit oil and blue smoke. This not only wastes oil and increases consumption but also generates a large amount of carbon deposits due to incomplete combustion of the oil, aggravating the wear between the piston and the cylinder liner, and between the valve and the valve seat. It may even cause the piston ring to seize, seriously affecting the normal operation of the diesel engine.

Generally, there is a dipstick inserted into the oil pan of a diesel engine to measure the oil level, simply called the oil dipstick. There are two points or two lines on it (i.e., points or lines A - B). The oil level in the oil pan of a diesel engine must be between points (lines) A and B of the oil dipstick.

Steps to check the oil level:

1.Pull out the oil dipstick.

2.Wipe the oil dipstick clean with a clean, lint - free cloth.

3.Insert the oil dipstick as deeply as possible until it can't be inserted any further.

4.Pull out the oil dipstick again.

5.Check the oil level. The oil level should not be lower than the minimum oil level A or higher than the maximum oil level B. Otherwise, you need to drain or add oil.
