Main Performance Indicators of Diesel and Gasoline Engines

Jul. 15, 2025

The main performance indicators of diesel engines and gasoline engines include power, thermal efficiency, mechanical efficiency, fuel consumption rate, torque, etc.

1. Power

The mechanical work done by an internal combustion engine per unit time, with the unit of kW. There are two types of power: indicated power and effective power. Usually, the power of an internal combustion engine refers to the effective power, which represents the net power output from the crankshaft of the internal combustion engine. To ensure the long - term and reliable operation of the internal combustion engine, the national standard stipulates the following for the power of the internal combustion engine:

(1)15 - minute power: The effective power that allows the engine to run continuously for 15 minutes. This is a power indicator stipulated to meet the requirements of machinery that needs good overload and acceleration performance in a short time.

(2)1 hour power: The effective power that allows the internal combustion engine to run continuously for 1 hour. This is a power indicator stipulated to meet the requirements of machinery that needs a certain power reserve to adapt to sudden load increases.

(3)12 - hour power: The effective power that allows the internal combustion engine to run continuously for 12 hours. This is a power indicator stipulated to meet the requirements of machinery that runs continuously for 12 hours. Generally, the 12 - hour power is also called the rated power, and the power of an internal combustion engine usually refers to this power.

(4)Continuous power: The effective power that allows the internal combustion engine to run continuously for a long time. This is a power indicator stipulated to meet the requirements of machinery that runs continuously for a long time.

Usually, the continuous power is 90% of the 12 - hour power. Each internal combustion engine has two of the above four powers and their corresponding rotational speeds marked on the nameplate according to its use and characteristics.

2. Thermal Efficiency

The percentage of the thermal energy equivalent to the effective power to the thermal energy that the consumed fuel can produce. It indicates the degree of effective utilization of fuel. Generally, the thermal efficiency of diesel engines and gasoline engines is between 20% and 40%.

3. Mechanical Efficiency

The ratio of the effective power of the internal combustion engine to the indicated power. It indicates the power loss of each internal system of the internal combustion engine and is represented by η. Generally, the mechanical efficiency of diesel engines and gasoline engines is in the following ranges: 0.78 - 0.85 for non - turbocharged engines and 0.80 - 0.92 for turbocharged engines.

4. Fuel Consumption Rate

The amount of fuel consumed per unit power per unit time, represented by ge. It is an important and commonly used indicator to measure the economy of an internal combustion engine, usually expressed as the mass (g) of fuel consumed by 1kW of power in 1 hour. Generally, the fuel consumption rate of gasoline engines is 270 - 475g/kW•h, and that of diesel engines is 215 - 340g/kW•h.

5. Torque

The moment that an internal combustion engine can generate to drive the working machine, represented by M. It indicates the intensity of the rotational force applied to the working machine.
