1.The Role of Diesel Generator Starter Motor

Generally speaking, the starting of a generator requires a battery to drive the starter motor. The starter motor consists of a transmission mechanism, a control mechanism and a DC motor.

2.Working Principle of Starter Motor

The electrical energy of the battery is converted into mechanical energy to make the flywheel on the engine rotate, so as to start the engine. The DC motor generates electromagnetic torque, that is, the DC motor is responsible for rotation. The transmission mechanism is used to mesh the gear driven by the starter motor with the flywheel ring gear, transmit the torque on the starter motor to the flywheel of the engine, drive the engine crankshaft to rotate and related components to carry out the working cycle until the engine starts; and after the engine starts, make the starter automatically disengage from the ring gear.

3. Starter Motor According to Control Mechanism

It can be divided into direct control type and electromagnetic control type. Now the most common starter motor is electromagnetic control type. According to the transmission mechanism, the starter motor can be divided into forced meshing type, armature moving type, gear moving type, deceleration type and the eliminated inertia meshing type. The gear moving type is a common starter motor, which has the advantages of long-distance control, labor-saving and convenient operation.

4. Detection Methods for Diesel Engine Starter Motor Failure to Start

If the diesel engine starter motor fails to start, from which aspects should we detect the cause of the failure and eliminate it?

(1)We can first check the battery. If the battery power is insufficient, the speed will be low or it will not rotate. At this time, we should charge the battery in time.

(2)It is necessary to check the joints of the connecting wires frequently. If the joints are loose, we should tighten them in time. If necessary, the terminal posts should be replaced.

(3)Check the carbon brush and rotor of the starter motor. If the carbon brush and rotor are worn, we should repair or replace them in time.

(4)Check whether the gear of the starter motor is worn and whether the fuse is burned. If the wear and burn are serious, replace them in time.

(5)The timing relay is needed because its failure is also an important reason for the starter motor not to run.
