How to Use Diesel Generator Oil Temperature Gauge

The oil temperature gauge is an essential basic device for each generator. The generator will definitely heat up during long-term operation, which affects the use of the generator, and the existence of the oil temperature gauge better controls the working temperature of the generator and reduces the probability of generator damage. So how can we better use the oil temperature gauge to judge whether its value is normal? Let's first look at the working principle of the oil temperature gauge?

When the engine oil temperature is too low, the heating coil is energized for a long time, the bimetallic strip adjustment arm bends greatly, the pointer swings at a large angle, and the pointer points to the low temperature position.

 

When the engine oil temperature is too high, the oil heats the bimetallic strip to the same temperature as the oil through the sensor housing, and the heating coil then heats the bimetallic strip to open contacts 1 and 2, and then the circuit is on and off. As a result, the power-on time of the oil temperature gauge is reduced, and the heating time of the heating coil is correspondingly shortened. The bending amount of the bimetallic strip adjustment arm is small, and the pointer swing angle is also small. At this time, the pointer points to the high oil temperature position. When the oil temperature exceeds 110°C, the contact pair is in the normally open position, the oil temperature gauge circuit is in the power-off state, and the pointer points to 110°C.

 

The normal reading of the diesel generator oil temperature gauge should be between 180°F (82°C) and 225°F (107°C). Don't panic if the oil temperature reaches 240°F (116°C) for a short time under full load.

 

Note:If the sudden increase in generator oil temperature is not caused by the increase in load, it indicates that there may be a mechanical failure, and an inspection should be carried out immediately.

 

During the warm-up period of the engine, the load should be gradually increased until the oil temperature reaches 140°F (60°C). When the oil is still cold, it will not play a good lubricating role. Continuous or long-term idling operation with oil temperature below 140°F (60°C) will cause dilution of the lubricating oil in the crankcase and generation of acid, thereby accelerating engine wear.
