Gasoline Generator Wear Types and Diesel Generator Comparison

Sep. 09, 2025

Gasoline generators are widely used in homes, RVs, and other settings due to their small size, light weight, simple operation, and portability. Like diesel generator sets, in addition to correct operation, regular and meticulous maintenance of all components is essential to prevent early wear failures and establish usage records. So, what types of wear occur in gasoline generators? Let’s explore this with Guangxi Dingbo Power.

1. Corrosive Wear

After the fuel is extinguished in the extinguishing chamber of a gasoline generator, it produces many harmful substances. Normally, 1-5 pounds of nitrogen and sulfuric acid are produced for every 100 gallons of gasoline extinguished. These substances not only corrode the cylinder, but also penetrate through the three piston rings (top, middle, and bottom rings) into the engine, causing metal corrosion to the main components of the engine, such as the cam and crankshaft. This corrosion cannot be eliminated by using smooth oil alone.

2. Rust Wear

When a gasoline generator shuts down, the temperature drops from high to low, creating condensation and even water accumulation inside the unit. This leads to severe metal rust, especially if the engine is restarted for short-distance operation before reaching a temperature high enough to evaporate the moisture—exacerbating the problem. Again, lubricating oil cannot resolve this issue.

3. Abrasive Wear from Dust

Gasoline generators require air intake during operation. Even with high-quality air filtration systems, it is difficult to completely prevent dust from entering the engine. Dust-induced abrasive wear cannot be fully mitigated by lubricating oil, and this issue is more pronounced in arid, rainless, and windy regions of China.

4. Dry Friction During Cold Starts

After a gasoline generator sits idle for 4 hours, all lubricating oil on friction surfaces drains back into the oil tank. Starting the engine at this point results in temporary "dry friction" due to delayed oil circulation to critical components, causing severe abnormal wear. Studies indicate this type of wear accounts for over 70% of total engine wear and cannot be addressed by lubricating oil alone.

5. Normal Operational Wear

Understanding the causes of engine wear clarifies the role of lubricating oil in reducing wear and highlights the importance of anti-wear protection products for extending engine lifespan and maintenance.

In comparison, diesel generators deliver significantly higher output power than gasoline generators. Gasoline generators, primarily small-power units, are suitable for household lighting and air conditioning. Diesel generators, on the other hand, range from a minimum of 8KW to a maximum of 3000KW, making them ideal for industrial and factory use.

Dingbo Power has advanced testing equipment, modern production technology, professional manufacturing technology, perfect quality management system, and strong technical research and development capabilities. It can provide 3KW~2500KW various specifications of ordinary, automatic, four protection, automatic switching, low noise and mobile generator sets, high quality and low energy consumption to meet the diverse power needs of customers, and can also meet users with different voltages and different frequencies. It is required to create a parallel power supply system for multiple units. If you are interested in our product or any question on generator, welcome to send email to [email protected].
