Differences Between Inverter Motor and Ordinary Motor

Core Differences

1.Inverter motors are mainly used in special occasions with frequency converters. The difference from ordinary motors is that they are equipped with a forced cooling fan, which cannot be connected from the main motor's outgoing line and is powered by an independent power source. Its function is to ensure the cooling of the motor at low speeds.

2.Inverter motors can flexibly adjust according to load conditions to achieve energy-saving purposes; while ordinary motors cannot be adjusted.

 

3.There are great differences in manufacturing processes between ordinary motors and inverter motors. Ordinary motors are mainly designed based on the starting process and power frequency working conditions; while inverter motors are designed based on the starting process and working conditions within the frequency conversion range.

 

4.The wiring method of inverter motors is the same as that of ordinary motors, generally star connection. The difference is that inverter motors are equipped with an independent cooling fan at the back for forced cooling of the motor.

 

Structural Differences

1. The insulation grade of general inverter motors is F grade or higher, with enhanced ground insulation and turn insulation strength, especially considering the insulation's ability to withstand impulse voltage.

 

2. Inverter motors have higher requirements for vibration and noise.

 

3. The cooling method of inverter motors is different. Inverter motors generally adopt forced ventilation cooling, that is, the main motor's cooling fan is driven by an independent motor.

 

4. The protection measures are different. For inverter motors with a capacity exceeding 160KW, bearing insulation measures should be adopted. This is mainly because magnetic circuit asymmetry is likely to occur, which will also generate shaft current. When combined with currents generated by other high-frequency components, the shaft current will increase significantly, leading to bearing damage. Therefore, insulation measures are generally taken.

 

5. The heat dissipation system is different. To ensure continuous heat dissipation capacity, the cooling fan of the inverter motor is powered by an independent power source.
