For diesel generators, proper maintenance is crucial to extend their service life—a fact all users should understand. However, many customers often feel overwhelmed after purchasing a generator set, unsure of how to approach maintenance. To address this, Dingbo Power, a generator manufacturer, has compiled the following key maintenance guidelines for generator sets:
1. Inspect and Maintain the Starting Battery
If the battery is not maintained for a long time, the evaporated water in the electrolyte cannot be replenished promptly. Additionally, failing to equip a starter charger or not charging it regularly will result in insufficient battery power, affecting the unit’s normal operation. To resolve this, use a high-quality charger and perform regular inspections and maintenance.
2. Prevent Water Ingress
Due to temperature changes, water vapor in the air condenses into droplets, which adhere to the inner wall of the fuel tank and mix with diesel, increasing its water content. When such diesel enters the engine’s high-pressure oil pump, it can cause rust on precision coupling parts and plungers, severely damaging the unit. Regular maintenance is effective in preventing such failures.
3. Replace Engine Oil Regularly
Engine oil serves as a lubricant but has a shelf life of approximately two years. Prolonged storage degrades its performance, potentially damaging generator components. Thus, engine oil should be replaced at regular intervals.
4. Replace the Three Filters (Air, Oil, and Diesel Filters) Regularly
Filters play a vital role in filtering diesel, oil, and water. Accumulated oil, dirt, and impurities on the filter screen reduce filtration efficiency over time. Excessive deposits can block fuel lines, disrupting normal fuel supply and causing the unit to shut down. Generator manufacturers recommend regular filter replacement to ensure smooth operation.
5. Maintain the Cooling and Lubrication Systems Regularly
Infrequent cleaning of the water pump, radiator, and pipelines leads to poor water circulation and reduced cooling efficiency. Cooling system failures can cause overheating (preventing shutdown) or water leakage (lowering radiator levels and triggering shutdowns).
6. Inspect the Fuel and Valve Train Systems Regularly
Engine power output relies on in-cylinder fuel combustion. Fuel is injected through nozzles, and carbon deposits accumulate inside the nozzles over time. Excessive deposits affect fuel injection volume, leading to inaccurate ignition timing and uneven fuel distribution across cylinders, resulting in unstable engine operation. Therefore, the fuel system requires regular cleaning and replacement, and the valve train should be adjusted to ensure uniform ignition.
