Increased diesel consumption is not necessarily due to decreased performance of the diesel generator set. While degraded performance can cause higher fuel consumption, elevated fuel usage may stem from other factors. The five main causes of rapid fuel consumption in diesel generators include higher engine power leading to greater fuel use, inadequate material quality or manufacturing processes, poor ventilation, and non-compliant load conditions.

Signs of Diesel Generator Set Performance Degradation

1.Reduced Unit Power: During normal operation, the extent of overall power reduction indicates component wear, such as wear in cylinder liners, pistons, and piston rings.

2.Increased Diesel Consumption: Higher fuel usage relates to multiple factors, including excessive fuel adjustment in injection pump elements, fuel injector leakage, poor cooling efficiency, insufficient intake/exhaust valve sealing, low-quality lubricating oil, and reduced cylinder pressure.

3.Elevated Lubricating Oil Consumption: Increased oil consumption primarily reflects greater wear in cylinder and piston assemblies. More oil entering the combustion chamber results in more blue smoke from the exhaust pipe.

4.Decreased Cylinder Pressure: Proper cylinder pressure levels indicate the degree of leakage in cylinder liner-piston components and intake/exhaust valve-seat interfaces.

5.Reduced Crankshaft Pressure: Crankshaft pressure measurements help assess wear in cylinder liners and piston assemblies.

6.Lower Oil Pressure: Oil pressure during normal operation indicates bearing wear conditions—lower pressure generally signifies greater bearing clearance due to wear.

7.Increased Contaminants in Lubricating Oil: Testing element concentrations in lubricating oil can determine wear rates of moving components.
