The role of diesel generator battery electrolyte is to form an interfacial double layer on the surface of electrode active materials, establish corresponding electrode potentials; second, participate in electrochemical reactions on the electrodes; third, play the role of ionic conduction.

Generally, for the convenience of transportation, the batteries delivered as accessories with newly ex-factory diesel engines do not contain electrolyte. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare and add electrolyte before use. For non-wet charged batteries, charging is also required. The electrolyte should use special concentrated sulfuric acid for batteries, or select pure, white, transparent industrial sulfuric acid and distilled water to prepare dilute sulfuric acid with a specific gravity of 1.280 kg/cm³. When preparing, the following proportions can be referred to: by volume ratio, concentrated sulfuric acid to distilled water is 1:2.8; by weight ratio, concentrated sulfuric acid to distilled water is 1:1.7. Finally, the actual measured specific gravity shall prevail.

When the ambient temperature is 20°C, the specific gravity of the electrolyte should be 1.280 kg/cm³. If the electrolyte temperature is not 20°C, the specific gravity should be corrected according to the actually measured electrolyte temperature. That is, for every 1°C increase or decrease in temperature, the specific gravity of the electrolyte should increase or decrease by 0.0007 kg/cm³. When preparing the electrolyte, acid-resistant containers such as lead tanks or acid-resistant, temperature-resistant plastic, glass, or ceramic cylinders without iron content can be used. First, pour an appropriate amount of distilled water into the container, then pour an appropriate amount of sulfuric acid, and finally fully stir evenly with a plastic rod.

To avoid accidents or injuries caused by splashing of boiling sulfuric acid, do not pour distilled water into concentrated sulfuric acid. Because concentrated sulfuric acid releases a large amount of heat when diluted with water. The specific gravity of water is lighter than that of sulfuric acid. If there is concentrated sulfuric acid in the container and water is poured in at this time, the water will boil, which is very easy to splash out and affect personal safety.
