In the 1980s, with the progress and development of the social economy, China's commercial vehicle industry had insufficient production capacity and could not meet the needs of economic development. Therefore, China National Heavy Duty Truck Group (CNHTC) and Cummins formally signed a technology introduction agreement, under which Chongqing Automobile Engine Factory, a subsidiary of CNHTC, would produce Cummins' 10-50 liter high-horsepower diesel engines under license. This filled the gap in China's high-performance, high-horsepower diesel engine sector. This cooperation made Cummins one of the earliest Western diesel engine companies to engage in localized production in China, and Chongqing Automobile Engine Factory became the starting point of Cummins' localized production in China.

Today, Cummins has invested over $240 million in China. As the largest foreign-invested enterprise in China's diesel engine industry, Cummins has more than 20 manufacturing enterprises in China, mainly producing engines, filters, emission treatment systems, turbochargers, fuel systems, alternators, and generator sets. In particular, the joint venture production of diesel generator sets by Chongqing Cummins and Dongfeng Cummins enjoys far higher popularity in China than other engine joint venture factories.

Calculated from Cummins' first cooperation with CNHTC in 1981, Cummins has been in China for 37 years.
