Calculation of 300kW Diesel Generator Fuel Consumption

May. 15, 2025

Diesel generator sets use diesel and other fuels, with diesel engines driving the generators to produce electricity. The diesel engine converts the thermal energy from diesel combustion into kinetic energy, and then the kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy by the generator. There is energy loss in each conversion process, and the converted energy is always only a part of the total energy released by combustion. The percentage of this converted energy is the thermal efficiency of the diesel generator.

Before purchasing a small diesel generator, customers often want to know the fuel consumption cost. However, most customers don't know the fuel consumption amount of diesel generators or how to calculate it, so they usually consult the generator's fuel consumption first. In fact, it's difficult to give a unified answer. Generally speaking, the fuel consumption of a diesel generator is related to the following two factors:

1.Fuel consumption rate: Different brands of small diesel generators have different fuel consumption rates, resulting in different fuel consumption amounts.

2.Size of the electrical load: When the load is large, the throttle is opened wider, and the fuel consumption is greater. Conversely, when the load is small, the fuel consumption is relatively lower.

Diesel generator manufacturers usually use g/kW·h to represent thermal efficiency, which means how many grams of fuel are consumed per kilowatt - hour. By converting grams to liters, you can know how much money's worth of fuel a diesel generator consumes per hour.

Dingbo Power, a diesel generator manufacturer, will calculate this economic account for everyone. Before the calculation, let's first measure that the density of the diesel used by the generator is approximately 0.84 g/ml. In liters, its mass is 0.84 kg. The most common fuel consumption of diesel generators is generally 200 g/kW·h. Calculated in liters, it is 0.238 L/kW·h. The mechanical loss power is around 250 kW. Then the calculation result is: 250 kW * 0.238 = 59 L/h. The fuel consumption of the machine is directly related to the load. A large load means high fuel consumption, while a small load means low fuel consumption. Generally, for a diesel generator with a power of around 300 kW, it's normal for the fuel consumption to be around 30 liters per hour. Most people haven't calculated this. Such a large amount of consumption is definitely not acceptable. So, by calculating, you can know the hourly consumption, and then figure out how to save fuel, how to let the generator rest and be adjusted to extend its service life.

Dingbo Power has advanced testing equipment, modern production technology, professional manufacturing technology, perfect quality management system, and strong technical research and development capabilities. It can provide 3KW~2500KW various specifications of ordinary, automatic, four protection, automatic switching, low noise and mobile generator sets, high quality and low energy consumption to meet the diverse power needs of customers, and can also meet users with different voltages and different frequencies. It is required to create a parallel power supply system for multiple units. If you are interested in our product or any question on generator, welcome to send email to [email protected].
