What You Save in Cost, You Lose in Peace of Mind

Jul. 04, 2026

In generator set manufacturing, the Engine Rear Support — the auxiliary bracket between the engine flywheel end and the generator is often dismissed as “non-essential.” Many manufacturers simply omit it to lower bid prices, saving on casting and assembly labor. But this small subtraction comes at a surprisingly high price.

The Engine Rear Support is not an option, it is the anchor that ensures long‑term stability.

With vs. Without: The Difference Is Stark

Without rear support, the engine's rear end is left unsupported. The full weight of the generator and its rotational loads fall entirely on the engine’s rear main bearing and flywheel housing. The results are unmistakable:

· Excessive vibration: Without rigid rear constraint, alignment between engine and generator deteriorates, causing severe shaking;

· Frequent oil leaks: Vibration transmits directly to the rear crankshaft seal and flywheel housing joint, wearing out seals and leading to oil leakage;

· Premature bearing failure: The rear main bearing becomes overloaded, accelerating wear and shortening service life;

· Reduced efficiency: Increased mechanical losses lower overall generation output;

· Safety risks: In extreme cases, flywheel housing deformation or fracture can destroy the entire set.

With Engine Rear Support installed, the bracket effectively shares generator weight and rotor loads, absorbs vibration, maintains coaxial alignment, and prevents axial movement. Equally important — during future maintenance, the rear support allows both engine and generator to stand firmly and independently, making coupling disassembly, seal replacement, and bearing inspection much easier and safer — no temporary hoisting or propping required, significantly improving service efficiency.

Is the rear support 'mandatory'?

Strictly speaking, domestic GB/T 2820 and ISO 8528 standards do not explicitly require it for all power ratings. However, from an engineering and long-term reliability perspective, for the vast majority of industrial generator sets-especially those above 30kW generator set- the engine rear support is an essential structural component. Marine, military, and data-center standby specifications consistently list it as standard equipment. Just as an engine needs front mounts, its rear end needs proper support.

What You Save in Cost, You Lose in Peace of Mind

Why do we insist on 'every unit gets Four Support Legs'?

Because we don't calculate short-term savings, we calculate long-term value. Eliminating a support leg might save a few dozen dollars, but vibration, oil leaks, bearing damage, and unplanned downtime, any single one of these risks costs far more than that.

Every generator set from our company, regardless of power rating, comes standard with 4 support legs for the engine. This is not just a technical standard; it is our commitment to every customer's long-term, trouble-free operation. We install the support not only for today's performance, but also for every maintenance tomorrow — making each one simply, safe, and reliable.
