Types of Generators and Selection Guide

Apr. 24, 2026

Diesel generators are mechanical equipment that convert diesel energy into electrical energy. In our daily life and work, without electricity, life would come to a standstill. This is not an exaggeration at all. Once we are without electricity, most aspects of our lives would cease to function, and prolonged power outages can cause huge harm. Some enterprises cannot afford even short-term power outages.

In addition to diesel generator sets, there are various types of generators such as gas, wind, and solar-powered ones.

1. Nuclear Power Generator

There is no essential difference from the steam turbine generator in conventional thermal power plants, and there are two types: full-speed and half-speed. Nuclear energy causes significant pollution.

2. Gas Generator

A rotary power machine that compresses and heats gas, then expands it in a turbine to convert thermal energy into mechanical energy. Before selecting a gas generator set, the appropriate fuel gas source should be chosen according to local resource conditions. Then, the composition of the fuel gas source should be analyzed, the low heating value of the gas calculated, and the relevant physical state parameters of the gas and environmental state parameters measured. Gas generator sets have more advantages than diesel generator sets, being more environmentally friendly. However, diesel generator sets have more mature technology, lower operating costs, and lower later maintenance expenses.

3. Solar Generator

It is a power generation method that directly converts light energy into electrical energy through the photoelectric effect produced when photons strike atoms when sunlight shines on semiconductors such as silicon. Its power generation is affected by geographical distribution, seasonal changes, and day-night alternation. When there is no sun, it cannot generate electricity or generates very little, which will affect the normal use of electrical equipment.

4. Diesel Generator

A diesel generator set is an independent power generation equipment, which refers to a power machine that uses diesel or other fuels and uses a diesel engine as the prime mover to drive the generator to generate electricity. The complete set of Dingbo Electric's units generally consists of components such as a diesel engine, generator, control box, fuel tank, storage battery for starting and control, protection device, and emergency cabinet.

5. Wind Generator

As a new type of power generation system with low cost, reliable operation, and no greenhouse gas emissions, the installed capacity of wind power generation systems is being increasingly widely used worldwide with an annual growth rate of over 30%, forming a global industry with an annual output value of more than five billion US dollars. Wind power generation needs to be realized through control devices in a timely manner according to changes in wind power and electricity demand.

6. Hydroelectric Generator

Hydroelectric generator: Driven by a water turbine. Due to the different natural conditions of hydropower stations, the capacity and speed of hydroelectric generator sets vary widely. For large and medium-sized hydroelectric generators, they are usually vertical with a salient pole rotor. Compared with hydroelectric generator sets that require the construction of dams, steam units that need to be equipped with boilers, fuel reserves, and water treatment systems, diesel generator sets have a small footprint, fast construction speed, and low investment costs.

7. Gasoline Generator

The working process of a diesel engine has many similarities with that of a gasoline engine, and each working cycle also goes through four strokes: intake, compression, power, and exhaust. The output power of diesel generators is much larger than that of gasoline generator sets. Gasoline generators are mainly for small power.

To choose which type of generator set, mainly depends on the power you need. If it is below 5kw, it is recommended to use a gasoline generator set. If it is above 5kw, Dingbo Electric recommends using a diesel generator set. You can also choose the generator set according to the usage environment. If there are environments with biogas, wind, or firepower, you can choose gas generator sets, wind generator sets, and thermal generator sets respectively! As a backup power source, diesel generators are suitable for small and medium-sized enterprises in inland areas.
