Types of Diesel Generator Fuel Tanks

Dec. 03, 2025

Diesel generator sets consist of many components, and the fuel tank is one of the crucial parts. However, fuel tanks also have classifications. Currently, there are three main types: base fuel tanks, underground storage tanks, and above-ground storage tanks. So, what are their specific differences? Let Dingbo Generator reveal it for you.

1.Base Fuel Tank

As the name implies, the design of the auxiliary base fuel tank is suitable for being above the ground but below the bottom of the Dingbo Power generator set. The cross-section of the auxiliary base tank is rectangular, and it is a double-walled tank. This helps prevent spillage in case of fuel leakage. Both tanks should be manufactured using heavy-duty welded steel. The main tank is equipped with multiple pipes and fittings, with the important ones being the fuel supply and return, vents, emergency pressure relief valves, and high-low oil level alarms. The tank filling system must be designed to prevent overflow during filling, and the inlet valve should automatically close when the tank is 95% full. After installation, the main tank is tested at 5 psig, and the secondary tank is tested at 3 psig.

2.Underground Storage Tanks

If you need to store more than 1000KG of fuel, you can choose underground storage tanks or above-ground storage tanks. Underground storage tanks have a higher installation cost but a longer service life because they are isolated from the environment. Underground storage tanks can be made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Such tanks are usually ribbed to provide better structural strength. Underground storage tanks can also be made of steel but with appropriate emergency protection to prevent corrosion from groundwater. Similarly, the pipelines from the underground storage tank to the generator can be fiberglass-reinforced plastic or cathodically protected steel.

Leaks and spills in underground storage tank systems can be costly and difficult to rectify. Such systems must be equipped with overflow and spill prevention devices and procedures. In the worst-case scenario, the installation of underground storage tanks should ensure that fuel spills or leaks are contained within a limited area. Therefore, the underground area is surrounded by concrete floors and walls. After the underground storage tank is installed in this area, the external area is filled with sand and gravel.

3.Above-Ground Storage Tanks

Due to different factors that need to be considered to reduce hazards, above-ground storage tanks present a fire risk and may spread fire to other nearby facilities. Therefore, these tanks must be kept at least the specified distance away from other facilities. To control fuel spills and leaks, a dike must be constructed around the above-ground storage tank. The free volume enclosed by the dike should generally be 110% of the tank's volume. Above-ground storage tanks also need to be isolated from weather conditions through a suitable protective structure.
