Turbocharging Technology Terms and Methods for Diesel Generator Sets

Dec. 23, 2025

Turbocharging can increase the power and improve the performance of diesel generator sets, so generator sets are equipped with turbochargers for enhancement. But do you know the meanings of technical terms related to turbochargers? Therefore, the editor from Guangxi Dingbo Power, a diesel generator manufacturer, shares the following for everyone.

Turbocharging Terms for Diesel Generator Sets

1.Boost Pressure: The outlet pressure of the compressor.

2.Pressure Ratio: The ratio of the compressor outlet pressure to the inlet pressure.

3.Charge Air Cooling: What is the meaning of cooling during pressurization? To reduce the temperature of the air entering the cylinder, increase the air density of the turbocharged diesel generator set and reduce emissions, the turbocharged air is cooled in an intercooler before entering the cylinder. The degree of intercooling is usually reflected by the intercooling degree, which is the ratio of the air temperature difference before and after the intercooler to the air temperature before the intercooler.

Turbocharging Methods for Diesel Generator Sets

1.Mechanical Supercharging

The so-called supercharging refers to the method where the compressor is directly driven by the internal combustion engine crankshaft through a transmission device.

2.Exhaust Turbocharging

The so-called exhaust turbocharging means using exhaust gas to further expand and do work in the turbine, which is used to drive the compressor for pressurization.

Exhaust turbocharging is divided into two major categories: two-stage turbocharging and single-stage turbocharging. A single-stage turbocharging consists of one turbine and one compressor or several turbochargers connected in parallel, mainly used in small and medium-sized diesel engines. Two-stage turbocharging means that air is compressed by two series-connected turbochargers before entering the diesel engine.

According to the energy utilization degree of exhaust pressure, there are also pressurization methods such as constant pressure pressurization and pulse pressurization. The so-called constant pressure pressurization refers to the pressurization method where each cylinder's exhaust enters a relatively thick exhaust pipe and then enters the turbine. Due to the constant pressure energy of the turbine exhaust, the turbine inlet parameters are stable, and the turbine efficiency is high. Pulse pressurization refers to the method where each cylinder enters the turbine through its own exhaust manifold.
