Troubleshooting Small Generator Non Power Generation

May. 29, 2025

Generators, as commonly used backup power sources, play an important role in our lives. However, many users encounter various fault problems when using small generators. For example, what should they do if a small generator fails to generate electricity and how to repair it? Therefore, we need to first understand the reasons for non - power generation and the inspection methods to solve the problems more efficiently and quickly.

Inspection methods for a small generator that starts but fails to generate electricity

1.Measure whether there is actually electricity. Replace the generator's voltmeter.

2.Switch it to automatic or manual mode.

3.Check and correct according to the wiring diagram.

4.You can charge the magnetism by pressing the charging button on the control panel, or use a 12V battery to charge the excitation winding. Connect the positive pole to F1 and the negative pole to F2. If the voltage still cannot be established, reverse the positive and negative poles of the battery and try again.

5.Clean the surface of the collector ring. Sand the end face of the carbon brush so that its arc matches the surface of the collector ring with an area greater than 70%. Increase the spring pressure.

6.Check the carbon brush and the carbon brush holder to ensure that the carbon brush can move freely.

7.Use a multimeter to check the forward and reverse resistance of the diode.

8.Use a multimeter to check if the forward and reverse resistance meets the requirements.

9.Use the 1K gear of a multimeter to check the winding of the generator set and see if the resistance value is too large.

Reasons for a small generator's non - power generation

1.The generator overheats.

2.There is an abnormal voltage between the generator's neutral wire and the ground.

3.The generator current is too large.

4.The terminal voltage of the generator is too high.

5.The power is insufficient.

6.The insulation of the stator winding is broken down or short - circuited.

7.The stator core is loose.

8.There is a short - circuit between the iron chips.

9.The generator loses residual magnetism and fails to generate electricity during startup.

10.The excitation reactor of the automatic excitation device overheats.

How to repair a small generator that fails to generate electricity

1.Keep a standby battery and charge the magnetism before power generation.

2.Pass a direct current larger than the rated current (for a short time) through the winding for magnetization. The specific current is determined by experiments.

3.Replace the damaged components and repair the faulty circuit.

4.Remove the scale on the contact surface, adjust the brush pressure, and fasten the brush holder.

5.Correct the wiring and charge the magnetism with the correct polarity.

6.Remove the scale on the contact surface, grind the brush, adjust the brush pressure to ensure that the brush is in close contact with the slip ring.

7.Check and repair the broken circuit.

8.Connect the joints well or repair the contact parts of the switch.

9.Find out the reason for the fuse blowing. After confirming that the generator itself and the circuit are normal, replace the fuse with the specified one.
