Size Design of Container Type Power Generation Equipment

Oct. 30, 2025

Container type power generation equipment is very common in power station projects. Generator set containers can be divided into two categories: integrated containers with bases and base-free soundproof enclosures.

Containers with bases can be arranged outdoors, commonly used in power station projects. The container and generator set can be skid-mounted for overall transportation and installation. In building-type projects, there are almost always restrictions on transportation channels and installation space, making it impossible to transport the container as a whole. Therefore, the usual method is to first place the unit on a concrete foundation and then fabricate a base-free soundproof enclosure on-site.

Containers and soundproof enclosures only differ in base and construction method, with no significant difference in basic structure. Functionally, they can be divided into several blocks: generator set room, air intake silencer hood, exhaust silencer hood, control room, and roof space. When estimating dimensions, these modules are estimated separately and then combined like building blocks. The same method applies to both containers and soundproof enclosures, except that indoor soundproof enclosures are more affected by the site.

Without considering air intake and exhaust, the generator set room is structured with different functional areas. The red area is the maintenance passage required at the generator end, usually about 1-1.5 meters; the minimum size is about 0.5 meters, just enough for people to pass through, and some projects even have it almost close to the inner wall of the container. If space permits, the length for generator rotor extraction should be considered, which is slightly less than the generator length.

The yellow area determines the container width. To ensure comfortable passage, over 0.6 meters should be reserved on both sides. In extreme cases (such as modified 40-foot standard containers), it can be almost close to the unit, with maintenance relying entirely on opening doors. The space for side passages is usually calculated from the outer edge of the engine.

The brown area is the auxiliary equipment installation zone for components like water pumps, expansion tanks, and plate heat exchangers. An area of approximately 2 meters × 2 meters is typically reserved. Fewer equipment items allow for looser installation, while more items require compact arrangement; upper and lower layers can be used if necessary.

The auxiliary equipment area is characterized by numerous devices and pipelines. Basic requirements include accommodating all equipment and pipelines; advanced requirements involve ensuring convenient maintenance of all equipment (including instruments and valves); higher standards require leaving a lateral passage while meeting the above two conditions; the highest standard ensures normal passage without the need for bending or risk of collision.

Most generator sets have a height of about 2-2.5 meters. Considering the required top space, the internal height needs to be around 3 meters. Including the base and roof thickness, the overall container height is usually 3.2-3.4 meters. The height of indoor soundproof enclosures depends entirely on indoor space and cost. Some containers feature detachable tops, serving as channels for overall withdrawal of generator sets.

Assuming the unit length is X and width is Y, the conventional dimensions of the generator set room are:

Length: X + 1.5m (generator end) + 2m (auxiliary equipment) + 1m (clearance and container wall thickness)

Width: Y + 2×0.7m (passages) + 2×0.1m (container wall thickness)

Height: 3.2m-3.4m

A 2MW gas generator set has approximate dimensions of 6.5m×1.9m, corresponding to a conventional generator set room size of 11m×3.4m.

Reference data: 400KW units are approximately 3-3.5m long, 1MW units are about 5m long, with similar widths ranging from 1.6-1.9m.
