When using flammable antifreeze coolants (e.g., ethylene glycol, alcohol), prioritize fire safety due to their flammable nature. Before adding antifreeze, clean the diesel engine’s cooling system to remove contaminants and prevent chemical sediment buildup that could reduce cooling efficiency. Engines using antifreeze do not require draining coolant after each shutdown but need regular replenishment and ingredient checks.

Bulk Storage Guidelines for Coolant Refills

1.Drain and thoroughly clean the storage tank to remove all impurities.

2.Calculate water and antifreeze quantities based on tank capacity. For example, a 500-gallon tank with a 50:50 coolant ratio requires 250 gallons of water and 250 gallons of antifreeze.

3.Determine DCA (Dry Chemical Additive) dosage by multiplying total tank volume (gallons) by required concentration. For 50:50 coolant, use 1.5 ounces of DCA per gallon. A 500-gallon tank thus needs 750 ounces (46 pounds 14 ounces / 21.3 kilograms) of DCA.

4.Add water to the tank first. With continuous stirring, gradually add DCA until fully dissolved. Ensure water temperature exceeds 10°C.

5.If using antifreeze, add it last and continue stirring to maintain a homogeneous solution. Without agitation or circulation, DCA and antifreeze may settle at the bottom. Circulate the mixture using a small pump to recirculate from the tank bottom to the top. Verify uniformity by sampling coolant from the surface, middle, and bottom to test antifreeze and/or DCA concentrations.

Proper coolant handling and storage prevent engine overheating and chemical deposits. Always follow these steps to ensure cooling system efficiency and safety.
