Preventive Maintenance for 1000kW Cummins Generator Set

Mar. 09, 2026

Proper maintenance is crucial to ensuring the longevity of generator sets. Maintenance must be performed by professional technicians from the diesel generator manufacturer. Records should be kept during maintenance to facilitate future maintenance scheduling. The Guangxi Dingbo Cummins 1000kW generator set adopts Chongqing Cummins series diesel engines, which have the advantages of advanced structure, strong power, good economy, easy operation, convenient maintenance and long overhaul period. Proper use of Cummins diesel engines can extend their service life.

Preventive Maintenance Knowledge for 1000kW Cummins Generator Set

1. Correctly implement the initial running-in regulations

The service life, operational reliability and economy of Cummins diesel engines depend to a certain extent on the running-in during the initial use period. Before official use, it must undergo 60 hours of running-in operation before being put into full-load use. Whenever cylinder liners, pistons, piston rings, connecting rod bearings and crankshafts are replaced, a short-term running-in should also be carried out according to the above running-in conditions.

2. Regularly check the PT fuel supply system

The 1000kW Cummins generator set adopts a PT fuel supply system. The PT fuel supply system is not equipped with a hand oil pump, so it is necessary to frequently check whether there is enough diesel in the diesel tank. After the diesel is sucked up and the engine is turned off, it takes a long time to restart the diesel engine, which is unfavorable to the service life of the starter. Secondly, in order to ensure the smooth flow of the PT fuel supply system and reduce the early wear of the PT fuel pump and injector, the diesel used must be clean. It must be fully precipitated and filtered to remove impurities before adding. Attention should be paid to keeping clean when refueling, and no dust or moisture should be allowed to mix in.

3. Not suitable for long-term idling

Long-term idling will reduce the fuel injection atomization quality and accelerate the early wear of the cylinder wall. Because the quality of atomization is directly related to fuel injection pressure, injector orifice diameter and camshaft speed. Long-term idling can cause the combustion temperature of the diesel engine to be too low and incomplete combustion, which may cause carbon deposits to block the injector nozzle holes, piston rings or jam the valves.

4. Correct starting and stopping

During the starting process of the Cummins diesel engine, after the diesel engine is started, especially in winter, it should idle for 3-5 minutes, and only after the oil pressure reaches 0.25mPa can it be gradually accelerated; when the water temperature is higher than 75℃, the oil temperature is higher than 80℃, and the oil pressure is higher than 0.25mPa, it can enter full-load operation.

The diesel engine must idle for 3-5 minutes before stopping, and then stop after the supercharger speed decreases. Because suddenly stepping on the accelerator will increase the diesel engine speed and make the supercharger speed reach a high speed instantly. At this moment, the oil pump stops working immediately when the engine is stopped, and the oil stops circulating, causing premature wear of bearings and sealing rings. Before starting after a long shutdown, the supercharger must be lubricated first. The supercharger intake pipe should be removed, and an appropriate amount of clean lubricating oil should be poured from the oil inlet pipe, otherwise the supercharger will be worn prematurely due to lack of oil during the initial start.

5. Do not work at low or high temperature for a long time

Working at low temperature for a long time will increase the low-temperature corrosion of the diesel engine and produce excessive low-temperature sludge; working at high temperature for a long time will accelerate the oxidation and deterioration of the engine oil, increase the coking of the piston ring in the high-temperature area, and produce excessive high-temperature deposits (paint film).

6. Methods to maintain normal operating temperature

The temperature of the cooling water of the Cummins diesel engine should be between 75-90℃, and the maximum should not exceed 95℃. The method to maintain the normal operating temperature of the diesel engine is: when starting the diesel engine, the heat preservation device in front of the radiator should be closed to make the heat absorption of the diesel engine greater than the heat dissipation, so that the diesel engine can heat up quickly; it should be particularly noted that under no circumstances is it allowed to stop the diesel engine operation for cooling.
