How to Determine the Appropriate Power of Diesel Generator Set?

Generally, we think that the power of the purchased diesel generator set only needs to be larger than the load capacity, so how much larger should it be? How to calculate it specifically? In any case, the first step is to confirm which equipment needs to be driven, such as air compressors, water pumps, air conditioners, motors, etc., and sum up the power of all load equipment that need to be driven by the diesel generator set. Each three-phase four-wire electric equipment has its motor marked with power. By adding up the power of these motors one by one, the final load capacity in kilowatts can be obtained.

Assuming the resulting figure is 200kW, conventionally, the power of the purchased generator set is the load power multiplied by a coefficient of1.2, that is, you need to purchase a diesel generator set with a continuous load power of240kW. However, this is only the conventional situation. Because there is still a very important factor not considered, which is the problem of starting current.

 

Suppose a factory needs to drive a batch of equipment, and the motor powers of these equipment are60kW,16kW,42kW, and20kWrespectively, with a total of 4 pieces of equipment. At this time, we calculate the required diesel generator set power according to the conventional method: (60kW+16kW+42kW+20kW) × coefficient1.2, and the result should be165KW.

 

The purpose of calculating the starting current is to check whether the instantaneous current of the load equipment will exceed the rated current of the diesel generator set. If the instantaneous current of the load equipment is lower than the rated current of the diesel generator set, then this diesel generator set can normally drive these equipment. Among these 4 motors, the largest one has a power of60KW. Generally, the starting current of a motor larger than50kWis 5-10 times its rated current. In conventional cases, the ratio of its rated current to rated power is 1:1, that is to say, the rated current of this60kWmotor is60A, and the starting current is480A.480Ais calculated by taking a conventional coefficient, because different brands and types of motors have different starting currents.

 

The maximum starting current of these 4 motors is480A, while the rated current of our diesel generator set is165kw×1.8=297A.295Ais less than480A, so the165kwdiesel generator set is obviously not competent. We should purchase a diesel generator set with a current greater than480A, and its corresponding power should be280kw.
