Battery Configuration Based on Power Output

Diesel generator sets below 50kW typically use a single 12V battery (e.g., 30kW and 40kW Cummins diesel generators).

Units with 50kW or higher power output require a 24V starting system, usually configured with two batteries. Larger generators also use two batteries but with different current ratings.

In cold climates, smaller diesel generators may opt for a 24V starting system or include a preheating system for reliable operation.

Battery Maintenance Practices

1.Long-term Storage

Remove the battery if the generator is unused for extended periods and recharge it regularly. If the electrolyte level drops below the minimum mark, replace the battery or add distilled water—avoid exceeding the "MAX" indicator to prevent leakage during charging.

2.Cleaning Terminal Corrosion

If white deposits appear on battery terminals, pour boiling water (exactly 100°C) over the affected areas. Once dry, apply grease to the terminals to prevent future corrosion.

3.Voltage Inspection

Regularly check battery status using a multimeter set to DC voltage mode (select a range above 12V or 24V). A single battery should read around 13V (minimum 11.5V), while two batteries (24V system) should show corresponding values.

4.Initial Charging Guidelines

For the first charge, limit duration to 4 hours to avoid reducing battery lifespan. Extend charging time under the following conditions:

Battery stored for over 3 months: 8 hours.

Ambient temperature above 30°C (86°F) or relative humidity over 80%: 8 hours.

Battery stored for over 1 year: 12 hours.

Before completing the charge, check electrolyte levels and top up with standard electrolyte of the correct specific gravity if necessary.
