Cummins Generator Fault Code System

The control system of Cummins diesel generator sets can display and record operational faults, represented by fault codes stored in the ECM. These codes simplify fault analysis and can be read using dashboard indicator lights or INSITE™ service tools.

(1) Using Fault Indicator Lights to Display Codes

Most but not all electronic fault codes activate corresponding indicator lights when active. Four types of indicator lights may illuminate:

① The yellow "warning" indicator light signals the need for prompt troubleshooting.

② The red "stop" indicator light for diesel engines (land generator set driven type) indicates the need for immediate safe shutdown. The engine should remain stopped until the fault is resolved.

③ The "maint" maintenance indicator light flashes when engine maintenance is required.

④ A "Water In Fuel" (W.I.F) indicator light shows when water needs draining from the fuel-water separator. Drain water promptly whenever this light flashes.

To check for active electronic system fault codes and maintenance indicator codes, turn the key switch to "OFF" position and set the "diag" diagnostic switch to ON.

Then turn the key switch to "ON" position. If no active fault codes are recorded, all indicator lights will illuminate with "warning" and "stop" lights remaining steadily on. If active fault codes exist, both "warning" and "stop" lights will briefly illuminate then start flashing the recorded fault codes.

(2) Fault Code Flashing Sequence

① Yellow "warning" indicator light flashes

② 1-2 second pause

③ Fault code flashes on red "stop" indicator light

④ 1-2 second pause between numbers

After red light finishes flashing numbers, yellow warning light flashes again. Fault codes repeat in the same sequence.

Each fault code flashes twice before proceeding to the next code.

To quickly advance to the next fault code, temporarily move the "idle/diag" adjustment switch to "(+)" position. To return to the previous code, temporarily move the switch to "(-)" position. If only one active fault code exists, the control system will continuously display the same code regardless of switch position.
