Cummins Diesel Generator Set Power Ratings and Specifications

The rated power on a Cummins diesel generator nameplate is measured at a specific rotational speed and influenced by factors such as operating conditions, ambient temperature, carburetor performance, and fuel injection quality. Thus, the rated power does not always represent the maximum output, as improvements in in-cylinder combustion can enhance performance. The "maximum power" refers to the highest output achievable under all operational conditions in a given region.

Power Rating Classifications (per National Standards)

Diesel engines are labeled with 1–2 of the following power ratings based on application:

15-Minute Power: For equipment requiring short-term overload capacity and acceleration, e.g., automobiles, motorboats.

1-Hour Power: For machinery needing power reserves to handle sudden loads, e.g., wheeled tractors, locomotives, ships.

12-Hour Power: For continuous 12-hour operation at full capacity, e.g., agricultural irrigation pumps, construction machinery, tractors.

Continuous Power: For long-term uninterrupted operation, e.g., irrigation systems, marine engines, power stations.

 

Key Generator Specifications

 

Rated Power: The mechanical output power at the shaft under rated voltage, frequency, and specified environmental conditions (equivalent to capacity).

 

Rated Voltage: The voltage ensuring normal operation. Common values include 220V, 380V, 3kV, 6kV, and 10kV. Actual supply voltage should typically range within 95%–105% of the rated value (90%–110% for specialized requirements).

 

Rated Frequency: Determines the output speed. China uses 50Hz; the Americas and Japan use 60Hz.

 

Wiring Configuration: Depends on voltage. For low-voltage motors (<3kV):

 

220V: Delta (Δ) connection

380V: Star (Y) connection

For high-voltage motors (>3kV):

380V: Delta (Δ) connection

 

Rated Current: The stator line current at rated voltage, frequency, and power output. Critical for selecting distribution equipment and power supplies. Calculated as:

Rated Speed: Rotor speed at rated frequency, voltage, and power (r/min). Slip is typically <3% for standard motors (lower for larger capacities) and 5%–10% for high-slip motors.
