Causes and Inspection Methods for Diesel Generator Cylinder Misalignment

Mar. 03, 2026

As a professional generator set manufacturer, Dingbo Diesel Generator has encountered a large number of piston and connecting rod cylinder deviation problems during customer generator inspections. Today, we will delve into the causes of cylinder misalignment in diesel generator sets and introduce practical inspection methods to help you identify and resolve such issues effectively.

The connecting rod corrector mentioned above is a special tool for checking the bending deformation of connecting rods. It is easy to use in maintenance work and can well ensure the quality. However, depending on working conditions and usage environments, some units may not have access to this tool. In such cases, the cylinder misalignment inspection method can be used to check the bending and deflection of the piston-connecting rod assembly.

Inspection Methods for Cylinder Misalignment

Install the piston-connecting rod assembly without piston rings into the cylinder as required, connect the connecting rod journal, tighten the bolts and nuts as specified, and rotate the crankshaft to bring the piston to the dead center. Then, use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance between the piston head and the cylinder wall in all directions. If the clearances are the same, it indicates that the assembly is proper, and the maximum clearance between the piston and the cylinder should not exceed 0.10 mm. If there is no clearance in a certain direction, meaning there is partial cylinder contact, readjustment is necessary. According to empirical methods, we can also observe the light leakage at the lower end of the cylinder to judge whether there is cylinder misalignment.

Causes of Cylinder Misalignment

Cylinder-related Factors

If the piston tilts in the same direction in the upper, middle, and lower parts of the cylinder, it may be caused by improper cylinder boring, non-perpendicularity between the cylinder axis and the crankshaft, or forward and backward displacement of the cylinder axis.

Crankshaft-related Factors

If the piston deflects in different directions in the upper and lower parts of the cylinder, it may be due to the taper of the connecting rod journal not being parallel to the main journal, or the non-perpendicularity between the crankshaft axis and the crankshaft centerline caused by crankcase deformation and mismatched bearings. If the piston changes its deflection direction in the middle of the cylinder, it is because the axis of the connecting rod journal is not in the same plane as the axis of the crankshaft.

Connecting Rod-related Factors

Individual pistons tilt in the same direction in the upper, middle, and lower parts of the cylinder, and the deflection direction is the bending direction of the small end of the connecting rod.

Piston-related Factors

The piston pin seat hole may be misaligned during reaming. In short, cylinder misalignment is not necessarily a problem of a single part; it is affected by many factors. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive analysis based on the inspection results, identify the root cause, and carry out targeted repairs.
