The 7 Cylinder Terms Commonly Used In Diesel Engines

Aug. 06, 2021

The cylinder of the diesel engine is composed of continuous working linear reciprocating motion, which ensures suction, compression, explosion and exhaust, provides ignition point for the diesel engine, makes the diesel engine explode and burns, causes the piston in the cylinder to move linearly, and provides torque for the crankshaft. Cylinder terms commonly used in diesel engines include top dead center, bottom dead center, stroke, crank radius, cylinder diameter, number of cylinders, duty cycle, etc.

The 7 cylinder terms commonly used in diesel engines are as follows:

1.Top dead center: The piston reciprocates linearly in the cylinder to make the piston rotate to the highest position, that is, the extreme position where the top of the piston is farthest from the rotation center of the crankshaft, which is called top dead center (TDC).

2. Dead point: The piston reciprocates linearly in the cylinder to move the piston down to the lowest position, that is, the extreme position where the top of the piston is closest to the center of rotation of the crankshaft, which is called the dead point (BOC).

3.Piston stroke: The movement distance of the piston between two dead points, that is, the distance between the upper and lower dead points is called the piston stroke or stroke. Corresponding piston stroke, crankshaft rotation 180 degrees.

4. Crank radius: The crank radius is the distance from the center of rotation of the crankshaft to the center of the crank pin, usually expressed by r. Generally speaking, the piston stroke is twice the crank radius, that is, S=2R, and the unit is mm.

5. Cylinder diameter: The diameter of the inner circle of the cylinder liner of a diesel engine is generally denoted by D, and the unit is mm. The larger the cylinder diameter, the greater the power of a single cylinder.

6.Number of cylinders: The number of cylinders of a single diesel engine is represented by I. The more cylinders, the greater the power of the whole machine.

7. Working cycle: The thermal energy and mechanical energy of the diesel engine are converted into heat energy. The pistons work in the cylinder, and the four processes of air intake, compression, expansion and exhaust are continuously carried out. Each operation of a diesel engine is called a working cycle.
