Storage and Preservation of Diesel Generator Sets

Jul. 24, 2025

To prevent damage to small diesel generator parts caused by rust and other issues, storage and preservation should be carried out according to the following methods based on the length of inactivity.

emergency generator

Storage and Preservation for Short-Term Inactivity of Small Diesel Generator Sets

1.Drain all fuel.

2.Rotate the engine piston to the top dead center of compression.

3.Store indoors, cover with a cloth, avoid damp locations, and keep away from flammable, explosive, or corrosive substances. Rotate the crankshaft regularly.

Storage and Preservation for Long-Term Inactivity of Small Diesel Generator Sets

1.Follow the steps for short-term storage as shared above.

2.Remove surface dirt from the unit, blow out internal components with compressed air, fill the generator with desiccants, cover all ventilation openings on the generator end cover with thick paper, and secure with rope.

3.Drain all oil from the oil filter, air filter, etc. Oil has a limited shelf life; prolonged inactivity causes changes in its physical and chemical properties, which can degrade cleanliness during operation and accelerate wear of unit parts.

4.Inject 100–200g of oil into each cylinder through the exhaust manifold, rotate the crankshaft dozens of times to distribute oil evenly in the cylinders, and position the piston at top dead center of compression.

5.Remove the valve cover and lubricate the valve mechanism with dehydrated oil.

6.Seal the exhaust port, air filter, fuel tank vent, and exhaust port of the low-temperature starting device with oil paper.

7.Clean all metal surfaces (diesel engine, generator, coupling port, base frame, tools, accessories, etc.) with detergent, and apply grease to necessary areas.

8.Rotate the crankshaft 1–2 times monthly, ensuring the piston remains at top dead center of compression after each rotation.

The long-term storage and preservation of large diesel generator sets differ slightly from small ones. Guangxi generator manufacturer Dingbo Power reminds users that regardless of whether large diesel generator sets are in use or storage, regular maintenance is essential to ensure timely startup and reliable power supply when needed.

Guangxi Dingbo Power Equipment Manufacturing Co.,Ltd was founded in 1974 and is one of the earliest manufacturers of generators and diesel generator sets in China. The company has a registered capital of 218.88 million yuan. The company covers an area of 86,000 square meters and a building area of 55,000 square meters.
