Standards Classification and Coding Rules in China

Relevant national authorities formulate a set of general standards and specific standards based on the commonalities of the same type of products; enterprises can also formulate detailed implementation rules for standards or specific standards for their own special products according to their actual situations. Among standards at all levels, especially national standards, there are three categories: mandatory standards, recommended standards, and guiding standards.

The code names of national standards and industrial standards consist of three parts.

The first part is written in letters, indicating the level and nature of the standard. National standards are represented by "GB"; industrial standards are composed of the first letter of the Chinese pinyin of the industry name plus a "B". For example, the mechanical industry standard is represented by "JB"; enterprise standards are represented by "QB". When the above two letters are used alone, it should be understood that the standard is a mandatory one; when a slash "/" followed by the letter "T" is added after the two letters, it indicates that the standard is a recommended one.

The second part is written in Arabic numerals, which represents the serial number of the standard among standards of the same level. For example, GB725 is the 725th national standard; JB/T6728 is the 6728th mechanical industry standard.

The third part is separated from the second part by a "-" and is also written in Arabic numerals, which represents the year when the standard came into effect. Old standards used two digits, such as "79" representing 1979; in recent years, standards formulated in China have uniformly adopted four digits, such as "2015" representing 2015.
