Six Common Mistakes in Using Diesel Generators in Low-Temperature

Mar. 31, 2026

Diesel generators have solved many problems such as power rationing or sudden power outages caused by natural disasters, resource shortages, etc. Therefore, diesel generators are essential in households, ships, hospitals, tourism, construction sites, enterprises and other fields. When using diesel generators in different environments, attention should be paid to the use and maintenance of diesel generator sets. Especially in some extreme environments, such as using diesel generator sets in low-temperature environments. The following will analyze six wrong ways of using diesel generator sets in low-temperature environments by Dingbo Power, which need everyone's attention.

1. Draining cooling water too early or not draining it.

Before shutting down, run at idle speed. When the cooling water temperature drops below 60°C and the water is no longer hot, then shut down and drain the water. If the cooling water is drained too early, the unit will suddenly shrink and crack due to the invasion of cold air at high temperature. When the temperature is below -4°C, the cooling water in the diesel engine's cooling water tank must be drained, because water will freeze at -4°C, and the radiator of the cooling water tank will be damaged due to volume expansion.

2. Randomly choosing diesel.

In winter, low temperature makes diesel have poor fluidity and increased viscosity, which is not easy to spray, resulting in poor atomization and combustion deterioration, leading to a decline in diesel engine power and economic performance. Therefore, when choosing low-temperature engine oil, try to select light diesel with low viscosity, low freezing point and good ignition performance. Generally, the freezing point of diesel should be 7-10°C lower than the local temperature in the current season.

3. Starting with an open flame.

It is not allowed to remove the air filter, dip cotton yarn in diesel to ignite, and then place the igniter in the intake pipe to assist combustion and start. In this way, during the starting process, the external dust-containing air will be directly sucked into the cylinder without filtration, causing abnormal wear of pistons, cylinders and other components, and also causing unstable operation of the diesel engine and damage to the machine. Therefore, the air filter element needs to be replaced frequently under low temperature conditions.

4. Incorrect starting method.

In order to start the diesel engine quickly, some staff often use the abnormal waterless starting method (start first, then add cooling water) in low-temperature environments. This practice will cause serious damage to the machine and should not be used. The correct preheating method is: first cover the heat preservation quilt on the water tank, open the drain valve, continuously inject 60-70°C clean soft water into the water tank, touch the water flowing out of the drain valve with your hand until it feels hot, then close the drain valve, inject 90-100°C clean soft water into the water tank, and turn the crankshaft to properly pre-lubricate the moving parts before starting.

5. Low-temperature load operation.

After the diesel engine catches fire, some diesel generator set operators can't wait to put it into load operation immediately. Due to the low temperature of the engine body and high viscosity of the engine oil, the engine oil is not easy to inject into the friction surface of the moving pair, causing serious wear of the engine. In addition, the plunger spring, valve spring and injector spring are easy to break due to "cold brittleness". Therefore, when the temperature is low, the diesel engine should idle at medium and low speed for a few minutes after ignition. When the cooling water temperature reaches 60°C, the diesel engine should be put into load operation.

6. Not paying attention to maintaining the temperature of the diesel generator set.

When the temperature is low, it is easy to make the diesel generator set too cold. Therefore, in a low-temperature environment, heat preservation is the key to making full use of the diesel engine, so the diesel engine should be equipped with heat preservation covers, heat preservation curtains and other cold-proof equipment.

Pay attention to the points analyzed by Dingbo Diesel Generator above, avoid the six wrong ways of using diesel generator sets in low-temperature environments, which can effectively improve the service life of diesel generators and extend the use time.
