The heat dissipation capacity of a diesel generator's cooling system is designed to ensure reliable cooling under the generator's normal operating conditions and high-temperature environments. When operating conditions (such as speed, load, and ambient temperature) change, the radiator's heat dissipation capacity must be adjusted to balance the heat that needs to be dissipated from the cooling system with its actual cooling capacity.

Cooling intensity is regulated by changing either the circulation flow of cooling water through the radiator core or the flow of cooling air, ensuring the engine operates within the optimal temperature range.

1. Changing the Flow of Cooling Air Through the Radiator Core

A louver or windscreen can be installed in front of the radiator to partially or fully block the radiator core. Louvers can be manually operated by the operator via a handle or automatically controlled by a thermostat to adjust their opening degree.

2. Changing the Circulation Flow of Cooling Water Through the Radiator Core

After absorbing heat from high-temperature components, cooling water dissipates this heat into the atmosphere as it flows through the radiator. Reducing the water flow through the radiator decreases heat dissipation, thereby increasing the overall temperature of the diesel generator’s cooling system. The water flow through the radiator is regulated by a thermostat installed in the water channel near the cylinder head’s water outlet. There are two types of thermostats: expansion cylinder type and wax type.

The expansion cylinder thermostat relies on vapor pressure from volatile liquids in the cylinder to open its valve, making it sensitive to the cooling system’s operating pressure, less reliable, short-lived, and complex to manufacture. It is gradually being replaced by the wax-type thermostat, which is insensitive to system pressure, reliable, and long-lasting.

Excessively high component temperatures can cause malfunctions, while over-cooling can also lead to adverse consequences. Thus, the function of the cooling system is to transfer excess heat from heated components, maintaining their normal operating temperatures.
