Preventing Overheating in Perkins Diesel Generators

The operating temperature of Perkins diesel generators must not be excessively high. The normal working temperature of the diesel engine cylinder head should be below120°C; otherwise, cylinder scuffing may easily occur. To prevent this, the following points should be noted:

Maintain Normal Fan Performance

Perkins diesel engines rely entirely on the fan to generate strong airflow for cooling the engine block. The fan speed can be adjusted by regulating the oil flow to the coupling based on the engine temperature, thereby automatically controlling the air volume. The exhaust thermostat and oil pressure adjustment screws of this cooling system are preset at the factory and must not be arbitrarily adjusted during operation or maintenance. In case of malfunctions, professional maintenance should be performed.

Keep Radiator Fins Clean and Unobstructed

The cylinder head and block of Perkins diesel engines have numerous external radiator fins. During operation, the strong airflow from the fan flows rapidly along these fins to reduce the high temperature of the engine and achieve cooling. If the radiator fins are clogged with dirt, oil, or paper, the cooling efficiency will be significantly reduced, causing the engine temperature to rise. After rinse thoroughly the radiator fins and eliminating oil leaks from the valve cover, the diesel engine will operate normally.

Prevent Loss of Cooling Air

The engine cover of Perkins diesel engines plays a crucial role in directing cooling air and preventing air loss. Therefore, it is important to ensure the integrity of all connecting components and seals.

Maintain the Air Filter

To ensure complete combustion of1Lof diesel fuel,15,000Lof clean air is required. If the air filter is clogged, reducing air intake, the diesel in the cylinder will not burn fully and may flee to the exhaust pipe for continued combustion. Therefore, the air filter of Perkins diesel engines should be maintained regularly to keep the filter element clean and unobstructed. Additionally, the fuel injection timing of the fuel pump should be checked periodically to avoid late injection, which would prevent complete combustion of diesel in the cylinder and cause the same problem mentioned above.

Maintaining proper engine temperature is crucial for Perkins diesel generators. Excessive overheating can cause pre-ignition, increased friction losses, reduced lubricating oil viscosity, oxidative deterioration of oil, and accelerated wear of components, ultimately deteriorating operational reliability and durability.
