Operation Guidelines for Cummins Generator Set Accessories

The main principle of diesel engine operation for power generation is to coaxially install a brushless synchronous alternator with the diesel engine crankshaft, and drive the motor rotor through the rotation of the engine. According to the principle of electromagnetic induction, the generator will output induced electromotive force, and a closed load circuit will generate current. The power for driving the diesel engine accessories comes from the crankshaft, and a front gear is installed at the front end of the crankshaft.

A complete Cummins generator set generally consists of a diesel engine, generator, control box, fuel tank, battery control battery, protection device, emergency cabinet, etc. Therefore, the above-mentioned components are crucial to the unit. So how to correctly install and use their related accessories?

1. Pump Drive Unit

It transmits power to the water pump through a hole. It is installed on the front gear chamber and connected to the water pump through a spline, and the pump drive shaft end has a pulley to provide power for the diesel engine. The front end of the pump drive shaft has a bushing gear chamber cover, and there are two bushings at the rear end of the drive shaft. Lubricating oil is supplied to the bushing through the oil passage in the drive support. Part of the oil entering the bushing lubricates the spline coupling through the hole in the shaft. There are small holes on the shaft to prevent excessive oil from entering the spline coupling.

2. Fuel Pump and Air Compressor Drive Device

They are installed on the left side of the diesel engine, and power is transmitted through the idler wheel through the hole. It can be equipped with or without an air compressor. The bolts on the sprocket hub of the air compressor drive device are special, and a hole is drilled on the bolt to provide lubricating oil for the spline coupling, while the bolts on the claw coupling of the fuel pump drive have no holes. There is an assembly mark on the drive gear, which does not need to be aligned with the mark on the intermediate gear of the left camshaft. The diesel engine has adjustment marks for valves and fuel injectors on the auxiliary drive pulley, and the marks must point to one end of the pulley shaft to obtain the correct bearing end clearance.

3. Governor Drive Unit

The governor drive provides power for the governor and fuel pump. Not all diesel engines are equipped with this device. It is installed between the governor drive and the Cummins PTB fuel pump, and other types of governor mounting housings. There are no bushings or thrust bearings in the drive bracket. The front end of the shaft is supported in the bushing of the front gear chamber cover of the diesel engine. The oil seal prevents diesel engine oil from entering the oil pan of the governor housing.

4. Hydraulic Pump Drive Device

The hydraulic pump can be installed at the gear chamber cover in front of or behind the cover. If the hydraulic pump is installed with a gear chamber cover, an SAEA-type double-bolt full flange is required. If only a thick drive hole is used, a four-bolt flat cover and gasket must be placed in front of the gear chamber cover. If only the front drive hole is used, two bolt covers and gaskets must be placed behind the hydraulic pump drive.
