Just as people use fans to cool down and stay comfortable when air conditioners are unavailable, diesel generators rely on similar mechanical cooling principles. During operation, diesel generators generate high temperatures from fuel combustion and friction between moving parts. To protect heat-exposed components like engine parts and turbocharger housings from damage, cooling systems are essential. Dingbo Power offers two main cooling configurations: water-cooled and air-cooled diesel generators, both of which share a critical component—the fan. Proper fan maintenance is a key part of diesel generator upkeep, and Dingbo Power recommends focusing on the following key aspects to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
Key Maintenance Points for Diesel Generator Fans
1. Inspect the fan hub for cracks. If cracks are found, replace the hub or repair it through welding. Ensure the weld is robust and thoroughly fused to prevent future failures.
2. Check for loose fan blades. If blades are loose, re-rivet them securely to restore structural integrity and prevent operational hazards.
3. Verify the tilt angle of the fan blades. The standard tilt angle ranges from 40° to 45°, and all blades must have the same angle for balanced airflow. If angles are inconsistent, perform cold straightening adjustments to correct them.
Balance Testing After Fan Repair
After repairing or adjusting the fan, a static balance test is mandatory to ensure stable operation. Follow these steps for the test:
1. Secure the impeller (including blades and frame) on a dedicated shaft and place it on a knife-edge iron fixture.
2. Gently rotate the impeller by hand and let it come to a complete stop. Mark the blade that settles at the bottom position.
3. Repeat this process several times. If the same blade consistently settles at the bottom, it is heavier than the others. Use a grinding wheel to remove a small amount of metal from the end or rear side of this blade to reduce its weight.
4. The allowable weight difference between any two blades should not exceed 5–10 grams. The fan is considered balanced when the impeller can stop with any blade in the bottom position during repeated tests.
