1. Relationship Between Cycle and Frequency of Alternating Current
The time required for an alternating voltage or current to complete one full cycle of positive and negative changes is called the cycle, denoted by the symbol T. Frequency, denoted by the symbol ƒ, refers to the number of cycles completed per second. It is evident that frequency ƒ and cycle T are inversely related, expressed by the following formulas:
T = 1/ƒ (s) or ƒ = 1/T
The unit of cycle is the second (s), and the unit of frequency is the hertz (Hz). The frequency of AC power supply in China is 50 hertz per second, commonly abbreviated as ƒ = 50 Hz.
2. Relationship Between Instantaneous Value and Peak Value of Alternating Current
Since the magnitude and direction of alternating voltage or current change constantly over time, they have different values at each moment. These values are called the instantaneous values of alternating current, represented by lowercase letters. Generally,irepresents the instantaneous value of current,urepresents the instantaneous value of voltage, anderepresents the instantaneous value of electromotive force.
The maximum instantaneous value of current, voltage, or electromotive force within one cycle is called the peak value, specified by uppercase letters with the subscript "m". For example,Imis typically used to represent the peak current,Umfor peak voltage, andEmfor peak electromotive force.
