Insulation Resistance Measurement and Improvement for ENGGA Generators

Measuring insulation resistance can effectively reflect the insulation of electrical equipment to the ground and indicate whether the equipment is damp. Therefore, measuring insulation resistance of electrical equipment is the most basic test.

For moisture issues on the test sample surface, visual inspection and wiping of test equipment can be used; drying the test equipment with a hair dryer; reliable grounding; and cleaning the surface of test leads.

 

Here are several methods to improve the insulation resistance of ENGGA generator windings:

 

1. Remove the automatic voltage regulator and place the generator in an oven at 100°C for 24 hours.

 

2. Drying the windings: Use a hair dryer or similar device to blow hot air into the generator's air inlet or outlet.

 

3. Winding short-circuit method:

 

Use a suitable cable (capable of withstanding the generator's rated current) to short-circuit the generator's main stator windings at the main terminals. Disconnect the automatic voltage regulator F1 and F2 connections, and apply direct current between leads F1 and F2 (F1 connected to positive, F2 to negative). The DC power supply should be within the range of 0-24V and capable of providing 1.0A current.

 

Place an AC clamp meter on the short-circuit cable, start the generator set, and measure the short-circuit current. During the entire drying process, this current must not exceed the generator's rated current value. Generally, the drying process takes 3 hours.

After the above drying process, measure the insulation resistance of the generator windings again. If it is higher than 1MΩ, the generator can be put into use. If it is still lower than 1MΩ, the above drying process needs to be repeated.

 

For generator sets used as backup power sources, to avoid the above problem of low insulation resistance, it is recommended to install an anti-condensation heater. During long standby periods, keep the anti-condensation heater in continuous operation.

For environmental issues around the ENGGA generator, clean up debris near the test sample, try to detach other connected equipment and shield with insulating partitions if necessary.
