Insulation Class Testing of Diesel Generator Sets

Modern life is changing rapidly, and people cannot live without electricity for a moment. One of the normal operating conditions of electrical appliances is the insulation level of their insulating materials, i.e., the value of insulation resistance. When heated or damp, insulating materials age, and their insulation resistance decreases, leading to leakage or short-circuit accidents in electrical equipment.

To prevent accidents, it is necessary to regularly measure the insulation resistance of various electrical devices to determine whether their insulation level meets the equipment requirements. The measurement of ordinary resistance usually includes two methods: measurement under low voltage and high voltage. However, insulation resistance generally has a high value (usually at the megohm level), and the measured value under low voltage cannot reflect the true insulation resistance value when operating under high voltage conditions.

 

Diesel generator sets have insulation classes. In generators and other electrical equipment, insulating materials are the weakest link, vulnerable to high temperatures, which accelerate aging and damage. Therefore, it is essential to learn insulation class testing to ensure good insulation performance. So, how exactly should the test be conducted?

 

There are two methods to test the insulation class of diesel generator sets: 1. Electrical measurement method; 2. Non-electrical measurement method. The non-electrical measurement method does not require detecting electrical parameters but instead detects partial discharges of the generator set through acoustics or special gases. This article introduces the electrical measurement method for testing the insulation class of diesel generator sets.

 

The electrical measurement method is further divided into the pulse current method and the radio interference method. The pulse current method detects parameters of partial discharges during the operation of the generator set online, i.e., the pulse current generated by partial discharges. The radio interference voltage method detects electromagnetic radiation waves generated during partial discharges of the generator. Since the pulse current method can calibrate the discharge charge based on the equivalent circuit of partial discharges and has high detection sensitivity, it is currently a commonly used method.
