Diesel Generator Set Noise Sources and Reduction Measures

With the development of economic construction, the state has become increasingly strict in environmental protection, and we often see noise requirements in many public places. When a diesel generator set starts and operates, it needs to burn fuel to provide power. The noise radiated outward through the cylinder head, piston, connecting rod, crankshaft, and engine block due to pressure fluctuations from combustion in the cylinder is called combustion noise. The noise generated by the impact of the piston on the cylinder liner and the mechanical impact and vibration of moving parts is called mechanical noise. Generally, the combustion noise of direct-injection diesel engines is higher than mechanical noise, while the mechanical noise of indirect-injection diesel engines is higher than combustion noise. However, at low speeds, combustion noise is higher than mechanical noise. Both types of noise are generated during the operation of the unit.

 

When the unit is installed on the base, strong vibrations occur during startup and operation, which also generate noise. If you observe the unit carefully, you will find that noise is also generated at the exhaust and intake ports of the unit's water tank during operation. As the unit's operating speed increases, the air flow speed increases, and the noise frequency also increases. Additionally, when the machine itself starts, the operation, friction, and impact between components will more or less generate noise, especially for some large machinery, the noise level is even higher.

 

After understanding the sources of noise, how do we determine what constitutes noise pollution? Relevant data shows that according to the average person's hearing, 0-20 decibels is very quiet, almost imperceptible. 20-40 decibels is relatively quiet, like a soft whisper. 40-60 decibels is moderate, similar to the volume of ordinary indoor conversation. 60-70 decibels is noisy and harmful to the nerves. 70-90 decibels is very noisy, and nerve cells are easily damaged. 90-100 decibels is extremely noisy, leading to hearing impairment. 100-120 decibels is unbearable, and exposure for one minute can cause temporary deafness. Therefore, noise has a significant impact on our lives.

 

Therefore, noise reduction for diesel generator set rooms requires targeted treatment based on the above causes of noise, mainly through the following methods:

1.Intake and exhaust noise reduction: Separate sound insulation walls are constructed for the intake and exhaust channels of the machine room, and silencing sheets are installed inside these channels. A buffer distance is provided within the channels to reduce the intensity of sound sources radiating outward from the machine room.

2.Mechanical noise control: The top and surrounding walls inside the machine room are paved with sound-absorbing and insulating materials with high sound absorption coefficients, and soundproof iron doors are used. These measures mainly aim to eliminate indoor reverberation, reduce the sound energy density and reflection intensity inside the machine room.

3.Exhaust noise control: A specially designed secondary muffler is installed in the exhaust system on the basis of the original primary muffler to ensure effective control of the unit's exhaust noise. If the length of the exhaust pipe exceeds 10 meters, the pipe diameter should be increased to reduce the exhaust back pressure of the generator set.
