Diesel Generator Fuel Consumption and Cost Analysis

Aug. 20, 2025

In general, the fuel consumption of a diesel generator is related to the following two factors:

1.Fuel consumption rate: Different brands of diesel generator sets have different fuel consumption rates, resulting in different fuel consumption.

2.Electrical load size: A larger load requires a larger throttle, leading to higher fuel consumption, and vice versa, a smaller load results in relatively lower fuel consumption.

To help you understand the approximate fuel consumption of generator sets and calculate their operating costs, here are the approximate reference values (for 100kw—500kw):

100kw diesel generator set fuel consumption = 21 kg = 26.25 liters

150kw diesel generator set fuel consumption = 31.5 kg = 39.4 liters

200kw diesel generator set fuel consumption = 40 kg = 50 liters

250kw diesel generator set fuel consumption = 52.5 kg = 65.6 liters

300kw diesel generator set fuel consumption = 63 kg = 78.75 liters

350kw diesel generator set fuel consumption = 73.5 kg = 91.8 liters

400kw diesel generator set fuel consumption = 84.00 kg = 105.00 liters

450kw diesel generator set fuel consumption = 94.50 kg = 118.00 liters

500kw diesel generator set fuel consumption = 105.00 kg = 131.20 liters

The above are only estimated values for reference.

The specific calculation method for diesel generator fuel consumption is as follows:

One liter of diesel is approximately equal to 0.84-0.86 kg (1L = 0.8-0.85KG).

Manufacturers of diesel generators often use the parameter G/KW.H, which refers to the grams (G) of fuel consumed by the generator set per kilowatt per hour. Then, convert the unit to liters (L) to know the hourly fuel consumption cost.

Generally, diesel generator sets consume 0.21 grams per kilowatt per hour.

The power generation cost of a diesel generator includes the following aspects:

1.Diesel cost;

2.Generator purchase cost;

3.Generator maintenance cost;

4.Generator operator salary.

For example: A 1000KW diesel generator consumes 260 liters of diesel per hour (diesel at 6 yuan per liter); the purchase or rental cost is 60,000 yuan per month (working 8 hours a day); lubricating oil consumption is 0.1 liters (lubricating oil at 50 yuan per liter); salary is 200 yuan per day; assuming the actual output power of the diesel generator is 800 kilowatts per hour. Through calculation, the power supply cost of the diesel generator is as follows: (1000KW × 0.8 actual output power = 800KW) and 260 liters × 0.8 = 208 liters/kw.h

1.Diesel cost calculation formula: 208 liters/kw.h × 6 yuan/liter = 1248 yuan ÷ 800KW = 1.56 yuan/kw.h

2.Labor cost calculation formula: 200 yuan/day ÷ 8 hours ÷ 800KW = 0.031 yuan KW.h

The above shows that the power generation cost of a 1000KW diesel generator is approximately 1.6 yuan per kilowatt-hour.

Generator sets with different output powers and different engine components have different fuel consumption. This data can only provide the fuel consumption per kilowatt-hour within the rated load. Because the greater the load, the more fuel is consumed. Under normal circumstances, the cost of generating one kilowatt-hour of electricity with a diesel generator set is about 1.6 yuan.
