Comparison of Electronic Fuel Injection in Diesel Generators

Regarding the speed regulation methods of diesel generators, both electronic fuel injection (EFI) and electronic speed regulation (ESR) belong to the category of electronic speed regulation, differing from mechanical speed regulation. However, there are essential differences in fuel injection control methods and speed control execution methods. Diesel generator sets using EFI achieve faster fuel cutoff compared to ESR.

An EFI diesel engine precisely controls the fuel supply or injection process through a computer. The electronically controlled fuel injection system of a diesel engine adjusts the fuel injection quantity by controlling the fuel supply or injection time. The fuel injection quantity is determined by the engine speed and the position of the accelerator pedal.

 

At the end of diesel injection, the fuel must be cut off quickly. If the fuel cannot be cut off rapidly, the low-pressure injected diesel will produce black smoke due to insufficient combustion, increasing HC emissions. The high-speed electromagnetic on-off valve used in the injector of an EFI diesel engine can easily cut off the fuel quickly, but the high-pressure fuel pump of an EFI diesel engine cannot achieve this.

 

An ESR diesel engine is a governor that feeds back the engine speed signal through a speed sensor. The governor converts the difference into a speed signal by comparing the set speed value and drives the actuator to control the fuel supply rack or sliding sleeve to achieve speed regulation. The fuel supply signal only depends on the speed signal, and the adjustment of fuel supply is realized through the mechanical action of the actuator.

 

The EFI engine uses sensors such as speed, injection time, intake air temperature, intake air pressure, fuel temperature, and cooling water temperature to simultaneously input real-time measured parameters into the computer (ECU). These parameters are compared with stored set parameter values or parameter maps, and instructions are sent to the actuator based on the optimal value after processing and calculation or the calculated target value.
