Working Principle of Diesel Generator Set Frequency Regulator

The diesel generator set is a mechanical equipment that converts other forms of energy into electrical energy. It is driven by water turbine, steam turbine, diesel engine or other power machinery, and converts the energy generated by water flow, air flow, fuel combustion or nuclear fission into mechanical energy and then transfers it to the diesel generator set, which then converts it into electrical energy. There are two ways to realize secondary frequency modulation:


1) The dispatcher of the central dispatching office will issue the load adjustment order to each plant according to the load flow and grid frequency, and each power generation unit will adjust the frequency to realize the secondary frequency modulation of the whole network.


2) Automatic control system (AGC) is adopted, and computers (computer dispatchers) are used to remotely control the units of each plant to realize the whole process of frequency modulation. Each unit participating in the system must have several coordinated control systems.


The primary frequency regulation function of the unit refers to the function that when the grid frequency exceeds the specified normal range, the change of the grid frequency will automatically increase or decrease the power of the unit according to the change of the grid frequency, so as to achieve a new balance, and limit the change of the grid frequency to a certain range. Primary frequency regulation function is an important means to maintain the stability of power grid.


The load fluctuation causes frequency change, and the system frequency can be kept within the specified change through primary and secondary frequency modulation. The frequency offset caused by small load change amplitude and short change period is generally adjusted by the generator governor, which is called primary frequency regulation. For the frequency offset caused by large load change and long change period, the governor alone cannot limit it to the specified range, so it is necessary to use a frequency regulator to regulate the frequency, which is called secondary frequency modulation.


In order to ensure the frequency stability of the power grid, the power link is generally subject to frequency modulation, namely primary and secondary frequency modulation. The secondary adjustment of frequency refers to the frequency regulator of the generator set. For the adjustment of frequency deviation with large variation range (0.5~1.5%) and long variation period (10s~30min), the frequency modulation plant generally performs this work.
