In fact, the reason why the wind turbine blades rotate slowly is very simple, which has a lot to do with their own weight and wind speed. The larger the wind turbine, the longer the blades, the heavier the weight, and the slower the rotation. The blades of a 1.5-megawatt wind turbine weigh about 6 tons, which is 1.8 times that of a 0.75-megawatt wind turbine, but they only rotate 18 times per minute, which is only 3/4 of that of a 0.75-megawatt wind turbine.

 

The rotation speed of wind turbine blades is also closely related to wind speed. The faster the wind speed, the faster the wind turbine rotates. A 1.5-megawatt wind turbine can increase the rotation speed through rotating gears when the wind speed reaches 3 meters per second, thereby driving the generator to generate electricity.

 

When the wind speed exceeds the maximum rotation speed of the wind turbine, the wind turbine will stop working. Because if the speed is too fast, the centrifugal force will be greatly enhanced, and the inertial tendency will break the balance of the wind turbine itself, and the blades will easily break.

 

Therefore, each type of wind turbine has its own speed standard. When the wind speed is too fast, it needs to rely on a computer to control and stop the wind turbine to reduce damage and wear caused by its own inertia. This is similar to the reason of which car is easier to brake between a car traveling at 30 km/h and one at 200 km/h. Therefore, the rotation of the wind turbine blades can more effectively protect the wind turbine from damage.

 

For example, a 1.5MW wind turbine rotates at about 1800 revolutions per minute and generates 1500 kWh of electricity per hour, with the impeller rotating about 18 times per minute. It is estimated that based on the electricity consumption of a household during the summer peak period, which is about 30 kWh per day, it can be used for almost 50 days.
