The losses during the operation of a diesel generator can be divided into the following categories:

(1)Stator copper loss: all losses generated when the stator current flows through the stator winding.

 

(2)Iron loss: the loss generated by the generator magnetic flux in the iron core, mainly including hysteresis loss and eddy current loss generated by the main magnetic flux in the stator iron core, as well as additional losses.

 

(3)Excitation loss: the loss generated in the rotor circuit, mainly the copper loss generated by the excitation current in the excitation circuit.

 

(4)Electrical additional loss is relatively complex, mainly including the loss generated by the end leakage flux in the iron components near it, the loss generated by various harmonic magnetic fluxes, and the iron loss generated by tooth harmonics and high-order harmonics on the rotor surface.

 

(5)Mechanical loss mainly includes ventilation loss, bearing friction loss, etc. The problems of rapid aging and frequent failures of diesel generator set components are mainly due to the quality of the air environment. Air with excessive impurities will not only overload the filtering and cooling systems of the diesel generator set, but also excessive impurity precipitation will cause poor operation, empty consumption and waste of the diesel generator set. Moreover, too humid or dry air will accelerate the aging and wear of diesel generator set components.

6 Methods to Reduce Operating Losses and Extend the Service Life of Diesel Generators

1.Running-in of diesel generator sets.

Whether it is a new engine or an engine after major repair, it must be run-in in accordance with the regulations before being put into normal operation. This is a basic rule to be followed when using diesel generator sets.

 

2.Ensure sufficient oil, water and air when the diesel generator set is working.

If the oil supply is insufficient or stopped, the engine will be poorly lubricated, the engine body will be seriously worn, and even the phenomenon of bearing burning will occur; if the cooling water is insufficient, the engine temperature will be too high, the power will be reduced, the wear will be increased, and the service life will be shortened; if the air supply is not timely or stopped, phenomena such as difficult start-up, poor combustion, reduced power, and abnormal operation of the engine will occur.

 

3.Ensure clean oil, clean water, clean air and clean engine body.

If the diesel is not pure, it will cause wear to the precise matching engine body, increase the matching gap, cause oil leakage, oil dripping, reduce the oil supply pressure, increase the gap, and even cause serious faults such as oil circuit blockage, shaft seizure and bearing burning; if the air contains a lot of dust, it will accelerate the wear of the cylinder liner, piston and piston ring; if the cooling water is not pure, the cooling system will be blocked by scale, which will hinder the heat dissipation of the engine, deteriorate the lubrication conditions, and cause serious wear of the engine body; if the surface of the engine body is not clean, the surface will be corroded and the service life will be shortened.

 

4.Related technical adjustment of diesel generator sets.

Check and adjust the valve clearance, valve timing, fuel injection advance angle, injection pressure and ignition timing in time to ensure that the engine is in good condition, so as to save fuel and extend the service life.

 

5.Check the fastening parts of diesel generator sets.

During the use of diesel generator sets, due to the influence of vibration, impact and uneven load, bolts and nuts are easy to loosen. Check all adjustment bolts to avoid accidents that damage the engine body due to loosening.

 

6.Correct use of diesel generator sets.

When using, ensure that the lubricating parts such as shafts and bearings are lubricated. After starting, put it into operation only when the water temperature is above 40℃. It is forbidden to operate under overload or low speed for a long time. Before stopping, first unload the load and reduce the speed.
