Understanding the Model Designation of Three-Phase Asynchronous Motors

Sep. 12, 2025

The model designation of a three-phase asynchronous motor is a code used to facilitate communication among users, designers, manufacturers, and other departments, simplifying the description of product names, specifications, and types in technical documents. Below is an introduction to the meaning of the model designation of three-phase asynchronous motors.

Composition and Meaning of the Model Designation

The model designation consists of four sequential sections: motor type code, motor characteristic code, design serial number, and excitation mode code.

1.Type Code: Represented by Chinese Pinyin letters to indicate the motor type. For example:

Y stands for asynchronous motor.

2.Characteristic Code: Represented by Chinese Pinyin letters to indicate the motor's performance, structure, or application. Examples include:

·B in YB3 indicates an explosion-proof motor;

·EJ in YEJ indicates an electromagnetic braking motor;

·VP in YVP indicates a variable-frequency speed control motor;

·D in YD indicates a dual-speed motor;

·X in YX3 indicates a high-efficiency motor.

3.Design Serial Number: Indicates the design sequence of the motor product, represented by Arabic numerals. The first design is not marked with a serial number, while derivative products of a series are marked according to their design order. For example:

·The 2 in Y2, YEJ2, and YVP2 indicates the second modified design;

·The 3 in YB3, YX3, and YE3 indicates the third modified design.

4.Excitation Mode Code: Represented by letters:

·S for third harmonic excitation;

·J for thyristor excitation;

·X for phase compound excitation.

Specification Code

The specification code is mainly indicated by center height, frame length, core length, and number of poles.

Center Height: Refers to the height from the motor’s axis to the bottom surface of the frame. Motors are classified into four categories based on center height (H):

·Micro motors: H = 45mm–71mm;

·Small motors: H = 80mm–315mm;

·Medium motors: H = 355mm–630mm;

·Large motors: H = above 630mm.

Frame Length: Represented by internationally general letters:

·S – Short frame;

·M – Medium frame;

·L – Long frame.

Core Length: Represented by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, 4, ...), where larger numbers indicate longer core lengths.

Number of Poles: Common poles include 2-pole, 4-pole, 6-pole, and 8-pole.

III. Special Environment Code

Special environment codes are specified as follows:

·G for plateau use;

·H for marine use;

·W for outdoor use;

·F for chemical anti-corrosion use;

·T for tropical use;

·TH for humid tropical use;

·TA for dry tropical use.

IV. Supplementary Code

Supplementary codes apply only to motors with additional requirements.

Example: For the motor model YB3-112M-2, the meaning of each code is:

·Y: Product type code, indicating asynchronous motor;

·B: Product characteristic code, indicating explosion-proof motor;

·3: Design serial number, indicating the third modified design;

·112: Center height (112mm);

·M: Frame length (medium frame);

·2: Number of poles (2-pole).
