With the development of society, diesel generator sets are used in various fields. Here, we will explain two common misunderstandings that users often make when using 100 - 800kW diesel generators.
Misunderstanding 1: The coolant temperature of the diesel engine should be lower
There are clear regulations on the coolant temperature requirements for diesel engines. However, some operators prefer to set the outlet water temperature very low. Some set it close to the lower limit of the outlet water temperature, and some even set it below the lower limit. They think that with a lower water temperature, there will be no cavitation in the water pump, and the coolant will not be interrupted, which provides a safety factor during use. In fact, as long as the water temperature does not exceed 95°C, cavitation will not occur, and the coolant will not be interrupted. On the contrary, if the water temperature is too low, it is extremely harmful to the operation of the diesel engine, as follows:
1. The fuel does not burn completely and forms gum, which can cause the piston rings to get stuck in the piston ring grooves and the valves to jam. As a result, the pressure in the cylinder at the end of compression decreases.
2. Unburned diesel may dilute the engine oil, deteriorating the lubrication conditions.
3. The water vapor after combustion is likely to condense on the cylinder wall, causing metal corrosion.
4. When the water temperature is too low, the engine oil temperature is also low. The oil becomes thicker, its fluidity deteriorates, and the oil pump pumps less oil, resulting in insufficient fuel supply to the generator set. In addition, the clearance between the crankshaft bearings becomes smaller, leading to poor lubrication.
5. At a low temperature, the combustion conditions of diesel in the cylinder deteriorate. The fuel atomization is poor, the post - combustion period after ignition is prolonged, the engine tends to work roughly, which accelerates the damage of components such as crankshaft bearings and piston rings, reduces power, and decreases fuel economy.
Misunderstanding 2: The speed of the diesel generator set should be lower
Many operators are reluctant to let the generator set operate at the recommended speed. They think that a lower speed will prevent malfunctions. In fact, an excessively low speed also brings some negative consequences, as follows:
1. A too - low speed reduces the speed of the associated working machinery, which degrades the mechanical performance of the equipment. For example, it reduces the water output and head of the water pump.
2. An excessively low speed causes the working speed of each component to decrease, which deteriorates the working performance of the components and reduces the output pressure of the oil pump.
3. It reduces the reserve power of the generator set, making the diesel engine, which should be operating normally, work at full - load or over - load conditions.
4. An excessively low speed reduces the output power of the generator set and its power performance.
The above are the two common misunderstandings in using 100 - 800kW diesel generator sets shared by the editor of Dingbo Power. We hope that users can avoid these misunderstandings to extend the service life of the generator sets.
